All of us are not born english speakers. We learn everything that we know today. Before you question your teacher's suggestion of reading newspaper, read it first. Read and read more. Then read others like story books. If you want wisdom, read the Bible. You will learn a lot from it. As you read, read it aloud and hear yourself. If there are words that you can't comprehend, use a dictionary. This is how I learn. Speak English with your friends and let them critique you.

if you really need or you really want to improve your English, then i guess the best way for that is to read BOOKS , yup thats right, its the most proven way in improving one's vocabulary and grammar. But if your not into reading books, try other reading materials like magazines and also newspapers. You can also learn from the internet, there are free sites there for English tutorials

I am a book worm and reading is the only mean to be myself. So I read whatever I get in my hands, it helps me to learn many new things and thus becoming aware of new stuffs too. I am from London so I don't need to learn English but I read to be able to write good english and proves myself too.

It is true that newspapers tend to write in every day English but their grammar and punctuation is normally correct (their readers point out their mistakes). I suggest you read a quality newspaper like The Times, The Guardian or The Independent. A good place for a variety of newspapers (cheaply) and writing styles is the news section of Google. I love it.

I would say that books were better than a newspaper, try children's books from a library - after all they are there to teach English children to read and write English!!

I improve my English by teaching English to Foreigners, in this way, I will try hard to study and learn more words and grammar so that I could teach them better. I can also improve my English by trying to write and read English articles etc. like what I am doing here in mylot.

I have been in the same condition, and i'm trying to make myself to be pretty clear in my tone and in my grammar..
I think, Grammar is such an important note that u should follow when u read or write or even speak..
I concentrate more on grammar ..
I have been reading books and newspapers to improve my efficiency over the use of this language..
Sidney Sheldon's novels will help much...
Listening to CNN will also help..
But always do remember, only the united states, united kingdom and Australia use English, most of the other european countries use their own language

Welcome to mylot, your teacher is right, you can read newspapers, story books, listen to news channels in tv that telecast in english and also try to talk to friends in english, it will certainly help..

i improve my english through reading books and novel books. of course with mr. webster dictionary with me.lol reading a lot really enhances my english vocabulary. i have encounter different english words upon reading a lot, which is very helpful to me. reading and learning. have a nice day!
