Here is my frustrating dilemma...help would be appreciated!!!  email this discussion to a friend?

Hi mylotters!!

Sorry I haven't been on for a few days. I have been extremely ill. I am just now getting to feeling better.

So, I have been thinking and thinking and thinking some more over this past weekend. And, I must admit right out of the box, that I am completely frustrated and am hoping that some of you would respond to this discussion and help me and guide me with REASONABLE solutions and/or answers

Our dog has spent the better part of the weekend in "time out"!! Since I don't like to hit her or spank her (I think that is cruel to an animal); I just tell her to get on her bed and stay there.

Here is the deal: This dog is 5 years old. She is old enough to know better. Yet, recently (within the last 4 to 6 months or so) she has begun pooping and peeing on our lawn. She never did this before. Nothing has changed in her home life or routine. But, she just decided to start pooping and peeing on the lawn.

This makes no sense to me at all!! She has the ENTIRE back half of the property for her potty area. She used to use this all the time. But, for some reason, she has decided to start using on our lawn. Since this angers my husband really, really badly, I am hopeful that some of you can help me or recommend some type of solution to this behavior!! I need to correct it. But, honestly, I am not even sure if I can do that, given her age at this point!!

I know that she knows better than to do this!! Yet, she still does it, even though she knows she will get into trouble.

I spend ALOT of time outside with her. I brush her, I play with her, I sit with her and talk to her...and yet, she is still pooping and peeing in the wrong area. All I want to do is correct this behavior and get her back to the area where she is supposed to do her business!!! Unfortunately, I cannot spend all my time with her. I have a house to take care of, a business to run and other animals to care for as well!!!

I love her to pieces and frankly, I do not know why she is doing this!!! Especially after all this time. This is making no sense to me at all. I cannot explain this behavior. So, if any of you can help me, I would certainly appreciate it very much. I am just so frustrated with this. I don't have answers or reasons to why she would be doing this. The most frustrating part is that she knows better than to do this. And, now she refuses to even go when I walk her around the yard and try to show her where she needs to do her business. She is just being so DEFIANT!!!

Help, if you can!!! Thank you!!!

I know this is frustrating, but I think she may be going in your lawn because another animal has been there and in a way she is marking the territory to let the other animal know that they shouldn't be there.

You may want to put her on a lead and take her to the correct spot for a while, to help remind her that she needs to be doing her business away from the grass area.

Another concern may be that she is lonely and this is her way of letting you know that she needs something different. Dogs are generally pack animals and in need of a companion of their own species, we humans are great for them, but there are many times when they need someone that plays like they do.

Good Luck!

Is the area kept clean for her? I mean, do you clean the area enough times so that she won't step in her own poop? Sort of like a litter box, if it's not kept clean, the cats will find another spot to poop or pee.

This is my only suggestion as punishment won't work, as I don't believe she's understanding what she's doing wrong.

When she has to go, and you KNOW she has to go, put her on a leash and take her back to that area. YOU are the boss, not her. Make her go back there. If she refuses to go to the bathroom, take her back in the house. Don't play with her, don't talk with her, just take her back inside. In ten minutes, repeat the process until she GOES to the bathroom. When she does, THEN reward her by telling her what a good dog she is, and THEN she gets to play. Don't reward her for doing bad things as it's confusing for a dog. Do you see what I mean?

My daughter had a similiar experience when she first got her rescue dog. She wouldn't go to the bathroom in the morning, and my daugher had to go to work. The dog only wanted to play with the ball all the time. I told my daughter to stop playing ball with her UNTIL she went to the bathroom, and then she got treated with playing ball. It worked, and now when she goes out the door, she runs to go to the bathroom because she knows she will get the ball. Otherwise, there is no playing until she does what is needed. But do make sure it's a cleaned up area for her in the back, because they will try to find a clean area to go to the bathroom, and that might be why she's doing this on your lawn now. Good luck!!

Please show patience and train the dog until she pooping on the exact location. She is just an animal not human being. She doesn't know our human beings'feelings.

It's possible that something has put her off using the 'designated area'. This might be one of many things - just a few I can think of are: another animal using it for the same purpose; that she herself has had an upset or infection of some kind and that instinct tells her not to use the same spot; grass is too high ... the list is endless!

The other alternative is that she is 'making a statement'. In other words, she is being what we call 'naughty' on purpose to attract attention or to register disapproval of someone (your husband, perhaps?).

You may have to go through a training session again. Put her on a lead and take her out to 'do her business'. When she begins to squat on the lawn, tap the top of her nose sharply with a finger and give a firm and clear 'No' then walk/take her straight to the 'designated area' and wait while she performs (if she is going to!) Praise her well if she does the right thing.

Tapping the nose is a very effective and harmless way of disciplining a dog. It should always, of course be accompanied by a 'No' in a firm and disapproving tone.

The first thought I had was maybe something scared her back where she is supposed to go. I guess all you can do is keep reinforcing the rules, taking her back to where she is supposed to go. Sort of retrain her like you did the first time. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

My thoughts exactly Polly.

If there were a snake or other critter back there that has caused your dog to sense this area as dangerous she will not return there on her own. The only way you will get her to go back is to retrain with positive reinforcement (cookies or treats are the best). You also need to show her that there is nothing to be fearful of back there so that she can regain the confidence she once had for using that area.

It's a dog yet it can ruin someone's mind and day. I think that if you can afford, you can sell or give it away to someone. This will solve your problem of pooing and peeing on your lawn. It's not good that you have a pet, yet you have much trouble because of it. There are many areas in our life that we should be concerned more than a dog. I believe that you have priorities in life than a dog.

You can try to let your dog go to that place where your dog should pee, like every morning or afternoon, try to bring your dog to that place so your dog will realize that its the only place your dog is allowed to pee. Sometimes dogs are territorial as well

You need to have infinite patience with your pet. You might like to check her usual place and see if it is in anyway different. Keeping a constant vigil for a day or two and keeping her on the leash and directing her to the right place could be one way. You could also collect a little of her mess and put it on a piece of paper and place it at the place where you would want her to go. Lastly you could use the services of a professional trainer.
Hug your little one for me. Will you?

your only choice is to walk her on a lead to where you want her to pee and poop then reward her for doing so

time out doesn't work, they aren't that smart

punishing, unless you can catch her at the INSTANT she is doing it doesn't work

the only thing that will work is to either walk her on a lead or to block off the area so she can't get to it to do it

Dogs have almost no real memory for these things
