composting dog waste  

Yeah, I kind of wondered about the sewer people who said that dog waste has a lot of muck in it. I mean I know a dog has a different diet, but didn't know it can affect the system..

I went on a tour of a Solid Waste Plant. With the way that the waste is treated, I can understand the reasons why they don't really want dog poop in the mixture. Not only does the difference in diet make a difference, but also the enzymes, bacteria, and chemical composition makes a big difference.

Once the human waste is processed and sterilized, it is dried and mulched and then it is sent to the fertilizer and potting soil companies. Human waste has certain components that are beneficial to plants. We can't use it in the "raw" state as it could create a horrible outbreak of cholera. But after being processed and sterilized it can be safely used.

Dog poop and dog pee is a plant killer. Just look at a lawn that a dog has peed on. I would think that if there was a huge amount of dog poop in the system, it not only would change the chemical balance at the waste treatment center, but it also would affect the sterilized waste and the biochemical structure.

I will add that if you go with the composting of the dog poop, you might also want to use lime in the mixture. It will help keep the odor from the composting down, noting is worse than lifting the lid to the poopy compost and being knocked over by the odor. The lime won't interfere with the septic chemicals.

There is a product sold through pet shops, pet catalogs etc. It's called a "Doggie Dooly" which has been manufactured for years for composting dog poop. It's smaller than the garbage can. You might also consider using a diaper pail. It's smaller and easier to bury.

I am glad that the article was honest enough to say that you shouldn't use the compost for any plantings. Also, make sure that it is started well away from existing plants or gardens.

Yeah, I wasn't composting to use on my plants, but it safely dispose of it, since I read that it can explode.. Wow I wonder how much of my doggie poop exploded in the landfill out here??

Thanks for the tip on the doggie dooly..Maybe I can get one on ebay since this is obviously sold in a specialized pet store..We just got wal mart..

One recommendation, keep the windows in the back of your house closed "Just in case". I would figure that if it explodes it will spread like it hit a fan!

Oh wow, I was thinking of the explosion either in the truck or at the dump..I never thought about in my own garbage can..well maybe it never did before because it is kept in the back which faces north, so it doesn't get as hot..

I had visions of a hot summer, the sun beating down on your poop bucket, and your window open with a fan in front of it when the still of that hot summer day being broken by an explosion...and the poop headed for the open window that had the fan in front of it. The rest is up to your imagination!

Yes, it is really too bad that we can't use dog waste for the garden, I'd have really nice flowers and fruit if I could...

Um no, if you read the whole post you will see this is composting to remove the waste safely, not to use..

That's ok, it happens..But on this site it says that flushing and throwing dog waste away is not the best way to get rid of it..So I am thinking of composting my puppies waste, because it would be embarrassing if my trash can exploded... And the way our toilet works, no way would I trust flushing it..

Yeah, and tell loverbear not to do what my husband said when I told him..He got off talking about setting a bag on the porch and lighting it on fire..Then he told my son to which I said, "Don't you dare do this or you will be in big trouble.." And of course my son loved the idea..

It is a great idea...in theory its the getting caught that stinks!
