Do we really need antivirus software? |
| |
| I'm not going to criticize any antivirus software companies for what the rumors said that they are the person who create the virus in order to boost their sales, I just wonder if we really need antivirus software. Though much have been done by those companies to improve their software's performance, antivirus softwares still significantly slowed down the computer. Not only that, in my opinion, if someone has a good habit on net surfing, that is, they never click any suspicious links, the chance their computer be infected with virus is very low. Therefore, Do we really need antivirus software? If we really need antivirus software, as a home user, why don't we use the free one, for instance, AVG, Avast!, Avira and the others? | | | | | |

| | Hi yicheng92, i believe that anyone who has internet needs antivirus, since viruses nowadays are everywhere, fomr emails to attack sites. I actually use free editions, since i only use my computer for entertainment and school works. Anyway, people or experts advise home users to use free editions since it basically has anything we need for an anti virus. The companies and business networks on the other hand really needs a PRO version of an anti virus since it covers up more on their work. | | | | | | |

| | I use Avast! Home Edition too. Since I'm just a student, before the existence of free antivirus, I've to use some pirated antivirus software in order to have my computer secured. But it was too troublesome to make yourself away from the detection by those companies. So that's why I have the idea that if we really need antivirus. Anyway, I agree that free editions is enough for a home user. Thanks for your comment. | | | |

| | I think it is really and very much needed, like the first aid for our system. It's a requirement. Run anti-virus software and make sure to keep it's database of threats up to date. | | | | | | |

| | In my country, due to the high expense of unlimited broadband, there are a lot of computers are not capable to connect to the Internet. So does a antivirus software essential to them too? Much of us turn off our antivirus software and firewall before we are going to play the online games, since it really affects our system's performance. Anyway, I'm agree with you that we should keep its database up to date in order to keep ourselves away from potential threat. Thanks for your sharing. | | | |

| | Anti-Virus is allright to catch the small stuff but if an experienced intruder wants access to your PC it's no problem to pass the Anti-Virus software. Luckily most of these intruders go for higher targets like government websites etc. I believe Anti-Virus software is useful, but it's much better to learn how a cracker is working. If you get attacked there is not much your software can do for you. I will say don't depend on it that's for sure. | | | | | | |

| | Ya, that is true. Most of the time the intruders only want to hack systems like government websites, big enterprise's system and others. So, by your sharing, we don't need to install a firewall software? Well, if it is true, I'm totally agree with you again. I don't think the hackers would spare much time to hack our system, since the information in our system is not profitable to them, isn't it? Thanks for your sharing. | | | |

| | It's still good to have a Firewall and a virus scanner, but it also depends on how you are using the Internet. If you download torrents and surf at PTC's and Traffic Exchanges it's important to have some sort of protection. There is a difference between a hacker and a cracker. A hacker is intelligent and usually doesn't do any damage - They hack to cross the boundaries and find security leaps usually at government and intelligence websites. On the other hand a cracker is the one doing damage to regular people. They might try to get you to install a program that stores the information you are typing on the keyboard or they might try to get you to install a program that will cause your system to crash. That's the difference between a hacker and a cracker. | | | |

| | yup.. i do beleive every computer needs antivirus... its to protect the computer... computers dont just get virus online, it could be offline too... like conecting external drives (flash drives) to your computer that has been connected to another... and oh, as a tech support rep, we recommend to use only one antivirus to avoid conflict between the softwares that might affect the performance of the computer too | | | | | | |

| | Ya, I has forgotten that we might get infected by removable devices like flash drives, external hard disks and others. Nowadays, the "autorun" virus is a very common virus that it can be found easily in those devices. I would like to say that most of my friends like to turn off their antivirus software before they are going to play online games. Some of them even uninstall the software because they are "useless". Thanks for your sharing. | | | |

| | I've heard that too that the big name ones create viruses but if thats true then why don't I have virus alert popping up everyday? I've gotten "attack blocked" alerts but those are a rarity. Its important to have it especially if you do something like PTC or visit sites you don't know about. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, you do need antivirus software. Unless you want your computer loaded with viruses and malware, and if it's serious enough, you won't even be able to use your computer. AVG isn't bad, I used it for awhile. The free ones are okay until you can afford to buy a good one, that's all I know. | | | | | | |

| | If you know every sites that are dangerous to browse and if you can figure out that a file is a virus then you don't need an antivirus software. Nowadays I don't think having a good habit in web surfing or someone is really careful while surfing the net is enough to protect us from virus. At least if you have a good antivirus program you are sure that everything you download in the net is safe. | | | | | | |

| | So I would like to recommend a software made by McAfee called "SiteAdvisor" to you. It is an essential software that can keep you away from those virus infected website, and it is a free software too. I think that this software doesn't bring burden to the system as it is only a simple plugin/add-in to your browser only. And I would like to suggest that download things from the sites you trust, like download.com, download.cnet.com and others. Things from those small sites are usually dangerous. Thanks for your suggestion. | | | |

| | Common wisdom is that you do, and true to that label it's a wise thing to do. In fact, if you have any doubt what the answer to the question is, then the answer for you is clearly, positively yes. Yes you do need to run anti-virus software, and of course keep it up to date. Now, it may sound like I'm being a little sarcastic or facetious, and I suppose I am a little. But on the other hand, I do know people who match that criteria. A good friend of mine runs without anti-virus software. He's not a geek, but he is very internet savvy. He can get away with it because he knows what he's doing. | | | | | | |
