Aspirating stomach contents during sleep |
| |
| Hi folks. It's only been fairly recently, but at least a couple times a week I will be awakened by acid reflux or stomach contents that comes up during my sleep and I inhale it into my lungs. I wake up coughing for the longest time because of the burning in my trachea and bronchial tubes. I'm not sure how far down the aspirated stomach contents gets into the airway, but I burn and cough. I will finally get okay and stop coughing and go to sleep. Does anyone else do this during their sleep? It's not something that has been happening.. this is fairly recent. So does this happen to you? I have sleep apnea... I'm wondering if my sleep disorder may have something to do with it. I'm going to my doc today, I will mention it to her. If you have any problems with aspirating stomach contents into your airway.. let's hear about it. | | | | | |

| | Although I have GERD, I've been lucky to not have aspirated much. One thing you can do to minimize this, is raise the head of your bed a couple inches. Put blocks under the legs rather than just raise the pillow. | | | | | | |

| | I don't know why it has started all of a sudden with the aspirating. I haven't been doing this. I'll be going to the doc tomorrow.. I went today and it was actually yesterday that I was supposed to go... so much for that.. it's been very frustrating today. | | | |

| | You can also try to sleep in a reclined position so you are not laying down flat, that will keep the reflux to a minimum or not at all. | | | |

| | Okay - I'm not saying it NEVER happens, but it isn't frequent I do find that if I don't eat late, it happens less - so that my stomach is not full, also I find that if I sleep on my left side it happens a bit less than when I sleep on my right side (I never sleep on my stomach or back, but for other reasons) | | | | | | |

| | I had a gastric bypass in 2001, so my stomach doesn't hold a lot. I often eat around 8 pm because I will be hungry if I don't.. my stomach only holds 4 to 6 ounces. | | | |

| | i just read in a magazine the other day to keep this from happening you should sleep on your left said. i said when you lay of your left side you lungs are higher then your tummy so you won't get that acid build up. try it and see what happens | | | | | | |

| | I always sleep on my left side.. it still happens. My left side is the only side I can sleep on. I only turn to my right side to give my left side a rest... it gets sore so I have to change.. but I can't sleep that way. | | | |

| | I had this problem years ago. Ask your doctor to do an upper GI and then he/she can tell what the problem is for sure. But you have acid reflux and it can be fixed with surgery. You need to not eat or drink anything at least for 2 or 3 hours before bedtime or when you lay down. Give it all time to go through your system and not be there when you lay down. Get a prescription for Nexium, it helps a lot. Your doctor may send you for an upper scope test too so they can use the camera to check out the esophgus. That acid will eat up the esophagus. Don't bend over either that allows the acid to come up too. You need to be propped up when you lay down. good luck... | | | | | | |

| | Hi moon.. thank you for your support up above with that mean person. I don't know what I said to cause him to respond that way. I wear oxygen at night because I could die at any time during my sleep.. and now to have stomach contents go to my airway when I am sleeping.. I am even more scared that I was. This is new to me.. so i don't know why it is happening. I just know that sleep apnea has something to do with it. I'll see the doc tomorrow.. I went today but it was the wrong day.. it was actually yesterday, but I got confused. I suffer from oxygen loss to my brain from sleep apnea. Thanks again for your support of me. | | | |

| | Any time Oreo, what he said was uncalled for and just plan wrong. I also have sleep apnea. This other thing is a whole different problem dear. I've had it awhile back really bad. I still do but not as bad. When you see the doctor mention the test, and upper GI. It's a simple test. You'll drink a thick drink that they can watch going down to your stomach with an x-ray. The test result will come in usually the next day and they will tell you what they saw. They will then give you Nexium or something for the acid in your stomach and tell you what I said before. They had me to elevate the head of my bed, I had to put a board at the end to keep me from sliding off. lol All of the things we did and 6 months of medicines did not help me. But I had more than one or two problems too. You may not need any more than the medicine. But I had to have a Nissan Wrap. You can probably look it up on the net. | | | |

| | Pye is right. I have went and read some of the other things you wrote. I have been being cordial to you. But reading what you have wrote I see you are not respectful of other people. If you expect respect you have to give it. People that do what you have done here do not stay here. The people that are here we all are like family and are here for each other. If you intend to stay here at ML then you must play nice with others. It's okay to joke around but at the appropriate times. | | | |

| | Yes, mylot is very prudent when it comes to do what they need to. They are fair, always. This does not have anything to do with the age of the people involved in the discussion. I have just as many younger people in my friend list as I do older ones. It's just that we do what is appropriate at any given time. We joke around as much as the next person, but when it's concerning someone asking a serious question about a serious condition. You do realize this was uncalled for and inappropriate, but do understand it has nothing to do with the ages of those in the discussion. | | | |

| | The age comment is just another jab, but I am overlooking it. When a person grows up, and we all do unless we die early... we learn what is appropriate treatment of others. It takes a few lessons sometimes to learn that everyone don't find humor in death. All that said, I'm done with it, and I accept the apology that was given. We are not to use the rating system as a weapon to punish people, but it can be used when rules are broken.. such as flaming and insulting comments. I didn't rate you at all, and I thought about reporting the comment, but I let it go because I know that you don't know me from Adam's house cat. My age has nothing to do with anything.. I'm a very young 60. I like to have fun just like everyone else, but I don't make insensitive comments to people who are posting about serious medical conditions. All I can say is it takes awhile to learn how to treat people online. You eventually learn what is offensive and what isn't. Good luck. | | | |

| | Hi Jill. I get up to potty 2 or more times a night also.. but that is normal for me. I take a light water pill for my blood pressure. I'm concerned because this aspirating is something new. I have sleep apnea and had it for many years.. but never had this reflux during sleep. | | | |

| | I've got acid reflux really bad. To start.. sleep on an incline... add a pillow from your upper back to head so you don't have your head at a sharp angle.. just make an incline of of 2 pillows. Helps alot. Acid Reflux is bad for me cause my stomach makes (on its own...everyone makes their own acid... it is what eats up the food while in our stomachs so it can be digested) but I make more than most, so I eat before bedtime. Bread something. Watch the calories, but a turkey sandwich is good for me. Bread absorbs the acid there and the turkey keeps the rest of the acid busy all night! Sounds silly but I have spent years figuring it out and it works for me. Crackers are another good thing. Milk is okay, but drink lot of water..helps nutrilize the acid a little bit. I also have Malox chewable tablets at my nite table...2 tabs helps me through the night. When it gets bad... Zantax (I get the generic for $4) or better yet if I can afford it Aciphex. The main idea to keep in mind is if you don't give the acid something to "eat" on...it will "eat" on your stomach and that is what is causing the pain. I have also noticed that if it gets really bad... I make myself throw up and I can (ugh) taste that firey acid bile coming up... but boy it helps. Now it is out of me and I drink half a bottle of water and some crackers and can sleep the rest of the night. Just works for me...I'm not a doctor and of course you should consult yours, but this works for me and I have consulted my doctor which is where I found out the details of why acid is. Good luck.. that pain is horrid. Oh yeah... ice paks. Ice paks nad me have become best friends for another pain reason, but put one at your back and at your middle ribs...freeze the pain and it helps nutrilize it! | | | | | | |

| | Hi coffeebreak, I used to have a hospital bed, but when I moved here, I let the hospital bed go back because I have a plush queen. Trouble is there is no way to elevate.. tried the bricks under the bed, but it really doesn't help, because I toss and turn so much that I end up at the bottom of the bed with my legs hanging off the end or the side. I wish I could just get into a position and sleep, but I thrash all night long. It's involuntary... I just can't lie still and sleep. I just sleep in naps, is more like it because the rest of the time I am turning back and forth. It is very frustrating. I may have to get the H bed back. I go back to the doc next month for a re-check.. so if I am still having problems I will ask her about it. I still trashed a lot with the hospital bed too.. I remember that. | | | |

| | Try the pillows. I toss and turn too, but if I make hte pillows just right, it is really comfortable. I also have a head trauma which prevents me from laying on my left side so back and right side is all I have to choose from. And I hate laying on my back, but if I get those pillows just right at a slant/incline it is really comfortable. Also helps me if I lay on my right side, to hug a pillow with my left arm. Keeps the weight from my arm from "smashing" my chest and aggrivating the issue. I have to eat right before I go to bed or else it is guarenteed I'll have the acid problem and be up in pain. I just watch what it is,,, usually bread something or another. Cheese and crackers works to and of course a glass of milk. | | | |

| | Hi Argytrans.. it's not an ache or a hurt.. it's my stomach releasing liquids into my respiratory tract. I wake up suddenly coughing because fluid has entered my windpipe. That part is painful because it burns my windpipe and the coughing is relentless... I will be seeing my doc tomorrow for a physical.. hope i can address this with her also. | | | |
