Google Self Drive Car Crash; Would You still Ride in One?

This an interesting story about a car equipped with Google's self drive technology rear-ending another vehicle (a prius). It is not such a big accident just affected the bumper (fender-bender). This just proves the technology is not yet ripe for cars to drive themselves on the highway even though there some self drive cars in controlled environments. My question is will you ride in a self drive car even if it is not on the highway? Here is a link to the full story: http://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/2091750/driver_or_car_to_blame_for_google_car_crash/

I have been reading about this technology for years now. In order for this to work, they have to set up satellites to work along with the vehicles and the streets have to have sensors in them. It is a way off, but I think it will be a reality. I would drive in one of them, but as long as they have a manual backup system where I can take over the control if needed.

Hopefully you will be able to react quickly to the manual back up controls when the need arises.

I would hope so. I have been driving for a long time. I think anyone who knows how to drive a car, could be able to quickly take over the manual backup.

Maybe the coming generations would use such type of cars.If this technology is used by everyone then there will be a loss of much selfemployed people.I cant imagine such type of things how will they go in the world. If everyone starts using such cars then i think there will not be a problem as we already have trains of such which has no drivers.I think its a good invention, may be it would take time for it to be used.

I think it will take to for the technology to fully develop too.

If there are sponsors and people who love new things to be implemented in their lifes then these innovations do can live in the world .Every innovation has its own importance ,it takes time for the people to get used to them. Now many are using electric vehicles without petrol and fuel.So such things will hapen as time goes.If not they will be in the musuem as master piece .

No, I just cannot imagine doing that It would make me very uneasy and nervous. I want to have some control.

You can not relax knowing that you have no control over the vehicle as it speeds on the highway.

no i won't. even if I get paid for it. live is so short and I don't want to make it shorter by doing something irresponsible like this. maybe i would later. but only if majority of the world's population also do. I guess that would mark the safety of the technology

I totally agree with you. The technology is not advanced yet. Probably in the near future.

I took driving lessons so many years ago. I wont want to lose the skills to a machine. But who knows, someday if I can no longer drive on my own, it might come in useful. If the technology matures, it may come in useful, provided people do not abuse the technology.

I think you raise a good point here and it is the possibility of people abusing the technology. Hope there would be lots of safeguards against that.

I consider riding a self-driving car like riding a roller coaster: only for excitement and entertainment, for a very, very limited period, and under highly controlled conditions, but always praying for safety and looking forward to disembarking. I will just walk if there's no other means of transport. It will be good for my heart, figuratively and literally. I'm aware though that passenger jets on international flights have parts of their routes on autopilot. This does not make me nervous because the routes are strictly regulated, pilots are highly trained professionals and rigorously chosen, the vehicles are well-maintained. Ground traffic is a different proposition altogether.

Yes that would be a real source of excitement because of the danger element. The autopilot on aircrafts are maintained by the real pilots so it is not totally an automated procedure.

I would not drive that. Maybe the technology is advance these days but not so advance. And of course what is a pleasure to drive that car if you are not involve with driving. If you prefer this you can travel by trail.

Yes you are right, the technology is not advanced enough and not safe enough as well. And it is true, you we don't want to be involved in driving then we can travel by train. Nice point of view.
