I think the inventor was fascinated by how burrs stuck to his socks.

Many people think Velcro was invented by NASA, but a Swiss inventor named George de Mestral actually came up with the idea in the early 1940's! After going on a walk with his dog, he noticed cockleburs sticking to his clothes and his dog's coat. Looking at them under a microscope, he saw that the cockleburs grabbed things so well because of the stiff, hooked fibers all over the surface of the cocklebur.

This led him to develop a fastening system with stiff hooks on one part, and soft hooks on the other. It was quite a challenge to build machinery that could produce the new fastener, but eventually a process was developed, and Velcro became available.

Like many people all over the world, NASA discovered how useful Velcro was. In the near-weightless conditions in orbit, Velcro is perfect to temporarily hold objects and keep them from floating away.

And what about the name "Velcro?" It's a combination of the words "velour" and "crochet."

Wow, I have honestly never thought about it and did not know someone walking a dog thought of the idea. It just goes to show, we should all follow up on our ideas. You never know, it could be a big hit!
