My house is about 800 meters away from river Mahanadi, downstream; the longest earth dam of Asia, HIRAKUD DAM is 3 kilometers upstream. It is raining continuously since last 30 hours; as the water reservoir was full and crossed safety level, 22 gates were opened to release water to the river, there is heavy flood; water has entered some low-level areas, people having houses there have been warned and advised to vacate, more rain is expected.
People have taken shelter in schools, temples, where relief camps are opened, free food etc will be given soon.
I have given shelter to 3 families in one of my houses that were vacant; they will go back when it is safe.
Is it rainy season in your place, are you having floods?
Do you help people during natural calamity like flood, fire, and earthquake?
Please share your views and comment on this.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks to Hurricane Irene some stated like Vermont have experinced flooding! It seems some parts of the USA has flooding! Thanks to heavy rains, hurricanes and tropical storms that were once hurricanes. Were I live we had flloding in 1997 thanks to much rain! Luckily I live on higher ground. Flooding is not likely to happen. I would not handle a flood if it would happen to me! I would go crazy!

hello professor,
i have read this discussion late because you already have told me of the power problem in sms last friday. two days without electricity, right?
it was very kind of you to give shelter to those families. i know they are going to remember your help.
in our place, there are flash floods that happen once in a blue moon but it is always a disaster. many perished in the last flash flood because there was no indication that there will be something like that. it has rained for two days and then the flood came in the wee hours of the night.
i have not taken in anyone who was affected by the flood because my house is small and could accommodate just me and my small family. but then, i have given donations of used clothing and canned goods. it was the office of the city mayor who distributed all donations from different sectors.
am very happy you and your family are safe.

In California, where I am from, we get some floods, but it is mostly earthquakes and fires, but we have become so used to it all that it has become the norm.
The Eastern Coast of the U.S. gets floods and hurricanes and tornadoes worst than anyone. The people here on the West Coast feel bad for them.
My advice to those people is stay on high ground.

Hi Professor!
Flood has been a common problem here in our country! Whenever a strong typhoon comes, lots of towns are put into state of calamities because of heavy flooding. People die, houses are destroyed, rice fields are flooded, streets are flooded, any kind of effect that the flood can bring has happened here. Here in our town we've experienced our share of a heavy flooding. It's really not a pretty sight. And it's really not a nice situation. I hope we don't experience it again.
I can't volunteer in calamities since I am also scared, too and during calamities, our family prefer to be together so that we know that each of us is safe.

It is raining continuously since last 30 hours! My goodness that is really a big problem! I can imagine how it would adversely affect those in the low land. We do also have such kind of flooding here in our country. But thank God these days we are having very fair weather. The sun shines in the morning and then later in the afternoon not so heavy rain falls so we enjoy both the sunshine and the cool temperature the rain brings.
My ancestral home where my siblings live which is just some few kilometers away from my home is near a river which also overflows when the rain falls heavily and lengthily. It is causing flood around and destroys so many properties. The flood is even reaching the village where I live so those with low houses are in panic. But my house is built on a higher ground so this serves as the refuge place of my siblings and some neighbors whenever there is flood. Whenever there are calamities around we should all have the heart to help the victims.

Hello Papa!
Yes we have experienced floods here in my State and one time I was badly affected. Not as affected as some who loose their homes but the DesPlaines river over-flowed, causing flooding to a great many areas.
My basement was filled with almost five feet of water. I had to call a company to bail it out and do repairs. I luckily had insurance on the home, all the damages cost us $15,000.
All in all we were blessed to have the insurance who covered $11,000 of the damage. So we were some of the lucky ones because some of the people who lived closer had way more losses.
Have a great night Papa!

Hi professor, We don't have a rainy season here in Canada but there are parts of the country where floods cause a lot of damage. It doesn't happen often in the part of the country where I live, but there are other weather related disasters here. I'm sure that I've never seen anything even remotely like the disasters that occur in your country though, due to the difference in population. Stay safe my friend and it's always good to know that you are helping victims of the flood. Blessings.

We are getting ready to go into Fall season here. It will soon be Halloween and farmers are readying to bring produce to market. In the Spring we sometimes have floods when the snow melts in the mountains. THen Summer dries things out and we often have fires. I enjoy all the seasons.

I wish it were the rainy season. Right now it is very hot and dry in my part of California. It has been in triple digits F this week. WE are hoping and praying we will not have the kind of fires they are having in Texas right now. When other people have calamities, I do what I know how to do to help. Sometimes that is just giving money to charities that are supplying food and water to those who have evacuated. Most of these calamities have not been near me, except our big earthquake in 2003,which casued a lot of damage here.
