Let's use the myLot codes more!

We are all from different countries here. Our mother language is different from others. Americans have English, Chinese have Mandarin (and others), Koreans have Korean (?), Japanese have Nihonggo, Indians have Hindi, ours is Filipino, and many others. Since myLot is an international site, we use the international language which is English.
However, not all of us are fluent in writing (and speaking) English. What we can express better in our mother language, we cannot express perfectly in English. In our own languages, we have terms and phrases that do not have equivalent terms and phrases in English. Each of our language is very rich. That's the beauty of language and that's its flaw. Sometimes, we cannot avoid but misunderstood each other. We cannot express what we really want to say and instead, say a different thing. Sometimes we say a joke, but we could not write it perfectly and others do not get our joke. Sometimes, we want to be funny but we write it in a way that offend others. Of course, grammar is a very important factor but as I've said, not all of us are fluent in the international language.
But there are the myLot codes to help express ourselves better. We can use them to show our emotions, if we are happy, sad, laughing, joking, angry, crying, celebrating, disgusted, scared, confused, disappointed, suspicious, angelic, and many others. We can use them to avoid misunderstandings. If we cannot express ourselves perfectly with words, maybe we can express ourselves better with a smiley.
For those who cannot use the codes yet, I'm sure you can use symbols in your computer instead. :)

Let's face it even offline there are many misunderstandings, even while speaking on the telephone. Not able to see someone face to face makes it yet more greater to mistake a response from someone. So back and forth interaction is certainly helpful to clear and or relive of any form of misunderstanding.
I do use the smile and or hugs emoticons as well especially if I am clearing a misunderstanding and want them to know that it is not a judgmental call but more so that they understand that it is help I am trying to give and not any type of attack and or hoping to clear the misunderstanding.
All we can do is explain and hope that within the interactions that two minds can somehow meet in the middle. I am careful not to joke with anyone I have not interacted with, regardless if they understand the language or not as again, with offline people even if we did so with strangers, there is no way of knowing what their personalities are like. So rather then create an unwanted situation, I do try to be careful and simply place information accordingly to the topic itself.

Sometimes it leaves me feeling the conversation was open/ended as I am not sure how they are reacting.

Most myLotters do make use of the emoticons which have been provided for our use. They do help in expressing ourselves better!
. If I don't quite agree with some one I will use
and when I want to laugh away which better emoticon than

When I am pleased with what I have said this emoticon
comes in handy. I hardly lose my cool and so I don't need to use
. When I want to wish someone for the night we have one for that too

That's really a very good way of using the codes!!!

A lot of meaning is lost in translation all the time. There are statements that make perfect sense in one language but when it is translated to another language in this case the English language then it may present a totally different connotation to what was intended originally. Using the mylot codes may bridge some of the divide but it would probably not solve all the problems. I think after interacting with the mylot community for this period of time I am able to better understand people when they start or respond to discussions than I did before.

I guess, people should bear in mind the general meanings of these codes.
I understand what you mean 2wicelot. I see people using the codes in entirely different manner. Some uses rofl a lot and I just couldn't see what was so funny in the post that made him roll on the floor laughing.
Hi LilyLoretta! I completely agree with what you said.

I'm willing to write back and forth several times in order to understand. Most people who use translaters only have a problem once in a while. People who try to translate using dictionaries or worde for word, that can take some time. I wrote back and forth 7 or 8 times to someone once.
My only frustration is when I don't understand, I write back, try to understand and the person never writes back to me. I didn't understand before and I don't understand now.
Even, sometimes, when people all understand, read and write English, there are some confusing times. Slang in different areas may mean different things. Not hearing a tone of voice is hard, too. You can't tell without a person's voice if they're kidding, picking on you, or mad. I think writing to have other people understand you is difficult. I had to write back and forth 4 times with someone who speaks, reads and writes English before we understood each other.
So the key word here is "patience" and another one is "determination." You have to be determined if you want to write to people, in your own language and others.

Hi writersedge! What you said are really true. There are really factors that make it difficult for people to understand something that is written. Here in myLot, when I encounter posts or discussions with lots of grammatical errors and mispelled words, or even wrong word usage and phrases, I just do my best to understand what the person meant. I read and re-read the post until I understand where it is coming from and what the person actually meant.
Hi Barb! If you see something wrong with my wordings, if you see a mistake, please feel free to correct me, okay? I like to be corrected since that's a good way for me to learn.

I admire your spirit of wanting to learn. I can't be in every discussion, but feel free to PM me if you have any questions about slang or other English expressions-- even if it occurs in a discussion I'm not in. If you are trying to choose between two words and don't know which is best, don't be afraid to ask me. I felt sad tonight in one discussion when I saw someone reaching for a word and chose one that really didn't fit. I knew exactly which word would have fit, but I didn't want to seem critcal, and this person had not asked for help. People who don't ask questions don't learn the answers. You will learn much more because you are willing to ask questions.

I do use those emoticons but not to the extent of using the maximum (3)
Or it depends on the topic and with my response, if it needs to use the maximum emoticon why not.
But if there is no need to use of it...i dont.
have a good day

I agree.
I make sure to always use the "happy", "lol", or "rofl" smileys when I am joking to let others know that I am joking so that they do not take it serious, or get offended.
I think the myLot code is a great feature on myLot, and very useful as well!

Those who cannot yet use the myLot code should not fret, as they will be able to use it shortly if they are active. You must have a rating of 200 beside your name in order to use the myLot code.
Mine is currently 340, so I am able to use the myLot code.

I don't always use them
, but do when I think it adds to the discussion
. There also seems to be a maximum number that you can use in each response
not sure if it is three or four. Just found out, the maximum is 3.
When I have time (not very often these days) I do try and read and respond to some who do not have good English (unless its so bad that I cannot understand it). I would also never give someone a '-' rating just because of poor English. Sites like Mylot can actually give some help to people to learn English.

Yes, you are right, Secret. We can always use those Mylot emoticons to express our feeling at that moment. i am always using the emoticons whenever i feels it is hard to express by words. Because some of the feelings seems easier to express through emoticons instead by using words. Hope you have a nice weekend...

Hello secret bear, I use them all the time
to help express myself even more. but unlike others i only use three to four similar smileys, there are some expressions that i am confused to use. anyways
there are smileys that i felt i don't really have to use unless it's a dire sitaution. take care and have a nice day.

That's a good thing! These myLot codes really do help us a lot in expressing our selves. Words are not enough and it may even cause misunderstanding so facial expressions really help.

You are so right, not every language is the same, most of them are expressed differently. I normally try to use mylot codes as much as possible, not only because they are cute and fun, but like you said it helps express how we are feeling at the time we are discussing.2 people like this

I use the codes sometimes but for some reason I always end up using my own emoticons like T_T and ^_^ and XD. Lolz! There are some times where people tend to get "offended" since they misinterpret the emoticons so it's best to add some explanation together with the emoticon (well, that's common sense, right? Lol!

I strongly agree with the moderator?I am a Chinese.I use Mandarin more fluently than English. But I think in this international site we should use English so that we can understand each other more easily.Uh,I haven't reached a rank of 200,so I can't use MyLot code.

now i feel so left out. i have been using computers for so many years now and yet, there are so many things about it that i never give any effort to make use of.
oh yes, it includes using those codes.
hey, this reminds me of an important thing. i have stopped doing mylot for so long and your mention of us filipinos doing mylot is carried with so much ease. so now i wonder, if indeed, mylotters are now being classified by countries of origin as we log in.

I agree with Barb. There is nothing of that sort, that we are classified by our countries of origin when we log in. Our posts just give it away. And yes, LilyLoretta, people can see our locations in our profiles so that's another way of knowing from what country is someone.

I don't know if anything happens like that when you sign in or not, but people often reveal things in their posts that make it clear what country they are probably from because they mention places and traditions. Sometimes an avitar can also give it away.

I just realized what the mylot code was yesterday. I wondered how others got those smiley faces and now that I know I will use them some. I may try to start using them more and our emotions can not always be seen by the way that we write.2 people like this

Hi friend, if im not mistaken you can use emoticon after you reach 200 posts, and I see you have made 246 posts so I think you can use emoticon but to use the copy paste feature you need to wait until you make 500 posts. I remember this. 100: we get a star, 200 we can start using emoticons, 500 we can use copy paste feature and upload picture when making a response. please correct me if Im wrong because Im a newbie (but I cannot wait until I reach 200 to use the emoticons)
