animal behaviour..

the babies.. - jack russell and chihuahua

I’m having a real hard time with my dogs. My Chihuahua is almost 6 months old, and he still hasn’t fully toilet trained. It’s starting to drive me crazy. Literally crazy! .. he chews everything, eats everything, goes to the toilet wherever he likes, despite the fact he KNOWS to go outside, because when he is brought outside.. he goes! My jack Russell, well.. that’s another kettle of fish altogether. She has decided that she no longer likes noises. Of any kind. Someone could walk past the window talking, and she howls her head off!! My partner works to 1 in the morning, and I cannot go to bed before she gets home, despite the fact I’m up at half 7 for work, because the jack Russell barks her head off when the front door is opened! I really thought I had to do something about it, so I contacted a woman who’s card I got from the local pet shop. She is an animal behavioural therapist, and she said she can help. It will cost £120 for the initial consultation, and the “plan” on how to make everything better.. and it also included 3 home visits. In this plan it will give dietary requirements, eating arrangements, sleeping arrangements, control techniques, house training schedules, how to stop the barking.. everything. Then it costs £40 for every home visit after that, if we are struggling to implement the “super nanny for dogs” plan.. Is this a good price? What do you think of this?

That's not exhorbitant considering I've seen what some trainers and behaviourists charge. It also looks like she gives a fairly comprehensive service including repeat visits and thoroughly going through many aspects of training and behaviour and diet. If you work out her hourly rate and expenses and preparation time and the fact you are asking for expert advice it's not an unreasonable amount. I don't know about the toilet training but as your chihuahua is only six months old, the chewing could simply be down to teething. Have a look at his gums if they seem red and a little sore that will explain that part of it.

no all his teeth have already came through. his teeth fell out and grew back in very early, so the teething process has stopped over a month now, and he is still chewing everything. and i don't just mean chewing. he is devouring things! he has tore an entire newspaper to shreds that he somehow managed to pull off the sofa. thanks very much for the comments on the price. i've never done or considered anything like this before, and i didn't want to be taken for a ride you know?

Well hell i think they are expensive!!! Why don't you just give them away and make me your pet instead? I promise i'll behave, i won't make noises, you don't have to spend much on my food and i'll surely pee where you want me too. Oh and i could clean your house too. How's that sound? Seriously, i really think it is expensive. Have you seen the dog whisperer? It's on National Geographic Channel and i think he has a book that a lot of people claim to have really worked on their pets. I tried to follow what he advised one time and it did work on my dog. Well i hope this is not too late since you started this discussion two weeks ago. I miss you Princess. Have you got an android or an iphone? If you do, pls download viber and i'll get in touch with you.

I am sure I had explained housebreaking your dog, did you try that? I mean your chihuahua isn't going in her crate is she? As for the Jack Russel situation, I have no idea because according to Penny, no one is allowed on our street, let alone our property.. So when she does that, I just hold her mouth closed and tell her "no bark," but so far it isn't working..

I guess how bad you want the end result as to whther it is worth it as such as if it gives you a good outcome and you can go to bed properly then I would say it is. My jacks are all barkers but, one in particular barks when next door comes in too - so annoying so I really feel for you!!

If it will give you peace of mind, then it will all be worth it. I hope the said dog therapist will really change your dog's bad habits.

i have 2 dogs as well... a rott(1 yr) and an american Eskimo (11 yrs) it took me almost 8 months to fully potty train my pup, like you dog, he ate everything, went to the bathroom whereever, barked constantly, and also attacked people. i thought about hiring someone but in the end he finally just one day stopped all the bad behavior. he is now very well behaved. due to the fact i have never hired anyone i dont know if thats a good price or not but i wish you the best of luck
