Are vandalism and pranks on New Year's Eve common in your area? Is it neccesary to remove the mailboxes and other objects so that they don't get blown up or stolen?
In my area many people remove their mailboxes, unlock them and leave them open or place bowls of water inside the mailboxes, so that the mailbox doesn't get damaged if some of the children try to blow it up. A bowl of water is a good solution - if you remember to remove it when New Year's Eve is over
We forgot that last time, and the next day we picked up 3 soaking wet letters!
They were so damaged that we couldn't even read them. This year we simply unlocked the mailbox and left it open. You can't close it without the key, and it didn't seem like a tempting target for the children.

It could be fun to try that with one of my friends, but I am pretty sure that they wouldn't believe me
It reminds me of a text message that I once received on New Year's Eve, as a joke the wrong year was written in the text message and I didn't even notice it when I first read it

yes, and we too got inspiration from the text to, however we manage to believe him that he is living in that year, by creating circumstances.

Never had a problem where I live. And I've been here for 3 to 4 years. Stuff can always be replaced. As far as mail, I had mail stolen once out of my mailbox in a neighborhood that wasn't so great, and in part the same key opened many mail boxes. In fact people would open mine and leave it open so I would NOT get mail.

That sounds like an annoying problem, I have never experienced that. In my area some people leave their keys in the mailboxes. I think that is a risky thing to do because everyone would be able to open the mailbox and steal the letters. I live on a relatively small island, but I still don't understand why some people just leave their keys in the mailboxes. I wouldn't do that myself.
