Hailstones last night

Hailstones are small pellet of ice that falls during a hailstorm, as they fall under gravity the speed increases, but under effect of buoyancy of air they soon attain a terminal velocity and fall with constant velocity.
Last night the weather was cloudy, suddenly the wind became strong, it rained cats and dogs associated with fall of hailstones.
Several houses that had asbestos or tiled roof were damaged. Hailstorm is not common in my place; I had experienced one some 20 years ago.
Have you ever experienced Hailstorms?
Are the stones big enough to damage roofs, corps and even kill animals in open space?
Please respond, comment on this and share your opinion.
Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen hailstones for years. when I was young we lived in a different town where there was a constant cross wind and we would get them in the Fall. They would get up to the size of golf balls and if you were out in it it really hurt.

hello professor,
this is very interesting. i have never been in a storm of wind and rain.. so i guess you will not be surprised if i say "no i have not experienced a hailstorm". in fact i have not learned of any hailstorm ever passing my country.
but i have seen in some videos about how hailstorm damaged roofs of houses and cars. i saw dents in them. and i just cant imagine what is going to happen if it hits a person
but i do hope that it didnt do any serious damage to your property and home.
have a nice day.

Sweety
As i have said they attain a steady terminal velocity under effect of buoyancy of air, at times the wind blows strongly, there are cases of people getting wounds on head if the stones are large.

Hello Professor.
Many years ago I experienced hailstone. When it comes, it is dangerous and destructive to some degree. I am wondering how hailstones come into being. These days it has been cold here in our area, but today it is fine with the sun in the sky though the temperature is still low, -3 to 9 centigrade degrees. Have a great day, Professor.

I have witnessed a few hailstorms in my life. Most of them were not long lasting and the hail was really small. They don't do much harm. I have heard of hailstorms where the hail is big as golf balls, even the size of softballs! Now those do damage like put dents in cars and window damage to homes for example! No that is crazy!

We do experience hail storms here from time to time, but it isn't something that we have on a regular basis.
The worst thing about them is the fact that they will damage roofs and windows, but the worst damage tends to happen to cars.
Typically our hail is smaller than the size of a pea, but there have been times that there have been hailstones that have been as big as a baseball.

HI Professor,
I was working in another country before and I have experienced seeing Hailstorm. At first I thought there was something throwing something on the AC box. We went out just to be surprised that there was hailstorm. I didn't get to see it big but some of my friends who was outside at that exact moment it fell says it is big. What I saw were smaller ones. We took a picture of it but it doesn't seem to be clear on the background

I live in a tropical country and have experienced some hailstorms in my lifetime. But these hailstorms were just small ones that cause little damage to property. The damage that this does to my country is to plants and produce since before the hailstorm comes, the temperatures would drop to almost freezing. There were some weird occurrences when I was young that it even snowed for a while, but not enough to cover the ground white. It would just be for a few minutes and we would just notice that it was so cold.

Hi there prof,
It has been a while since ive commented on some of your discussions, but hey here I am now right, Anyway i haven't experienced once but there was a hailstorm that occurred in my place good thing we were in a different city back then because our car is brand new and the wreckage was substantial in some vehicles around our village and on our roof. Take care prof.

We have had very few and rare hailstorms where I live but they weren't that strong as to damage the houses or other property. However, they can cause small damage to the glass windows on the cars. Hopefully, we'll never have hailstorms that can be so damaging...
