If you don't like bodily fluid discussions, you might want to go to a different discussion. Both my cat and I have diarhea. The nearest vet is 20 miles away. Which ticks me off. One of the selling points of my buying a home here was that a vet was less than a mile away. I could have put a cat in a carrier and walked that far in all but the worse weather. 2 years after I bought the place, the vet retired and no one took over his practice. Since we both have diarhea, it would be really hard to get us both to the vet. Plus they have this sign that says no public bathroom. I can do tt=tea and toast. I can do brat=bananas, rice, applesause, and toast. I can do pedialite. I've done all of those. But what do I do for my cat? I'm at a total loss. I've never had a cat with diarhea that I can recall. Now I wonder if I got this from school subbing or if the cat gave it to me. Or did I give it to the cat some how. At any rate, what comes out looks exactly the same from both of us. I'm also going to check to see if the mobile vet unit is booked up and if they'll take credit. If they're booked up and/or won't take credit, I don't know what I'll do. So has anyone had a cat with diarhea? What have you done to help the cat? Poor Creamie, he's dropping weight fast.

I saw the first reply, I hope your cat wasn't accidentally poisoned..If so, she will need a vet and the more she "excretes" from her body, the better and like it is mentioned, plenty of water. If it goes too long, perhaps you can get her to eat rice, because that is what I was told when my shepherd had diarrhea, but you may want to check on how rice affects a cat's body first..Keep us updated and I pray you both are on your way to recovery real soon..

My cat's food has rice in it. As you know, I was a rep for Blue Buffalo and that has brown rice in all but the wild formula and a new line of low carb that doesn't either. So he eats cat food with rice in it all the time. I don't think he'd eat just straight rice. Rice with chicken broth, maybe. Poisoned animals that I've had foam at the mouth, Creamie doesn't know how to hunt, just Baby does. Baby is fine. So not a poisoning.

besides the possibility of poisoning, it's also possible that both of you have amoeba infection, most common in out country is E.Histolytica, it can be passed from humans to pets and vice versa. The name of the game is to prevent dehydration and lose of body electrolytes. Also try taking body temperature if there is fever, you have to control that too, good luck and hope you be well soon.

I'm taking pedialite, so I should be fine. It's the cat I'm worried about. The cat and I drink the same water, so maybe.

I think you mean bacterial infection. It's like spring and we have lots of run off here. I suppose my well could be contaminated. But my husband and my other cat are fine.

I am so sorry that you both have the diarrhea. One old cure for the problem is rice water. Take about a cup of rice and boil it in three cups of water. Then both of you can start drinking the rice water. As for you, stay away from solid foods...eating stuff like clear jello (not the puddings), broth without meat or other stuff in it, and plenty of water. While the cat food has rice in it, it's the "food" that keeps the diarrhea coming. Try to get Creamie to drink the rice water. Keep the food intake to a minimum, which is hard for a cat. But the stuff in solid foods will irritate the intestines and bowels keeping the problem going. I highly doubt that the problem was caused by a poisoned mouse or that you gave it to each other. It could be as simple as a change in your water. I am on a well and periodically I will get diarrhea from minute changes in the water. We chlorinate the water but some microbes can survive the chlorination. I will also check my cat books to see if they have something for the cat. According to my vet books, it suggests a bland diet. Mix rice with boiled lean meat such as beef or chicken. Then feed small amounts of the mixture to the cat every four hours. If your cat doesn't like rice, substitute pasta or mashed potatoes (not instant because of the chemical additives) If after two days the stools are still loose try adding a little bit of fiber to the diet. The fiber will help draw the liquid out of the stool and will make the stool firmer. It also slows the fermenting action in the colon. Also give him Gatorade. It will help replace the electrolytes in the system. According to the vet book the cats seem to like the fruit punch flavor better. Also, cut out any dairy, don't give them any milk or cheese until the diarrhea had stopped. Hopefully these suggestions will help. But make sure that you cut back on her food intake and substitute it with a bland diet. The cat food takes digesting and right now it isn't being digested properly, hence the diarrhea.

I was thinking defatted chicken broth and rice. Keeping the food away from one cat and letting the other cat have some will be a challenge. Creamie is picky some times. Not sure if he would drink any flavored water with electrolytes or not, but I can try. Thanks and take care.

i really don't think a human can get diahrea from a cat. I would call a vet and ask. We have a vet here that has been here for over fifty years. Diahrea is the pits. I have to be careful after I eat something because it seems to go right through me. Poor Creamie. lol

I am very careful in treating cats, if this cat has lost weight due to this problem time to travel that 20 miles and see the Vet. Dogs you can treat with Peptos. But never give a cat any meds unless you are sure it's all right to do so. I guess you could look online if you can find a site you can trust. Good luck

There is usually a 2 week waiting period to see a vet here. There is sometimes a walk-in, but I've had to wait 4 hours during that and there is a sign,"No public restrooms." If I could I'd bring him. My only hope is the mobile vet, but they haven't called me back. So I'd have to buy a diaper for which I'd have to travel 8 miles and back, sit in my own $hit for 4 hours. When we had our own town vet, he had an emergency hour that he could plug you into. Too bad he retired. The mobile vet answering machine said they would try to get back to me in 24 hours. They have about 3 more hours. It's the mobile vet or I'm having my husband put a bullet in his head.

Maybe you can try some cheese. I have heard that it can stop it. I know there are some things that can be passed between people and animals but it's not many things. I hope that mobile vet is available. Is he acting ill other than that or does that seem to be the main issue? I hope you two get to feeling better.

I tried cheese first off for both of us. It didn't seem to help either of us. But he seemed to get worse. Me it didn't do much of anything. He's dropped a lot of weight. Haven't heard anything from the mobile unit yet. Message I left hasn't returned.

Feed him rice. It worked for me when Sandy first came.
