A tampon is used by women during their period. (Menstrual bleeding.) It's made of cotton or rayon and has a string attached to it, and it is inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual flow; the string allows one to remove it easily when it needs to be changed. It's an alternative to pads/sanitary napkins. (In some languages, "tampon" simply means a "plug" made of absorbent material that is used to absorb bleeding from wounds, etc.)
