reversing the motor on my garage door opener to open position.

My garage door is forced all the way in the closed position, the cable is jammed so far forward its almost into the pully. This is a older model sears opener. When I plug in the opener its still trying to move the door into the down position making it impossible to free the cable so I can re-attach the safery pull and get it working again. If I can free the cable I can fix the door. Is there a switch that I can hit to make the motor manually reverse itself to the fully open position. Im stuck as to what to do here.
