Critism on friends

You're having dinner with people you respect and admire. They all criticise a close friend of yours (not knowing he/she is a friend). The criticism is unjustified. What would you do?

I would just say that you guys need to change the conversation because that is a friend of mine. Tell them they can have their opinions but you would not like to hear them
