How do you keep Cats out of the Christmas tree? |
|
We have three cats. Two of which I cannot keep out of the Christmas trees. Do you have any suggestions? I haven't even put the ornaments on yet and they want to be in it. I also need help on keeping them from eating the artificial tree and getting sick from it if you have a solution please let me know.

1. sabrinam (711) | 4 years ago | Have you tried spraying them with squirt bottles of water, we've tried that once with one of our cats that is particularly stubborn and he really didn't like it, lol. He ran off and hasn't done it again. Otherwise I would suggest looking at DrsFosterSmith.com for tips, they're vets and it's a very expansive website with lots and lots if info about kitties.

2. Idlewild (4728) | 4 years ago | You don't. You can't. Cats are genetically coded to rip apart Christmas trees, piss on couches, and so on.
Maybe you can give them catnip and keep them stoned until the new year.

Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | thank you for such lovely language on a discussion that you evidently didn't take much interest in. I will be sure to give you a negative.

Idlewild (4728) | 4 years ago | Actually I'm a cat lover and was making a humorous remark about their tendency to get into all kinds of mischief despite their owners' best efforts.
Thanks for the negative rating, I'll be sure never to attempt a lighthearted remark on any of your discussions again.

3. polachicago (7880) | 4 years ago | all I can say is GOOD LUCK. It is so hard to keep cats from any plants. By having say that, it is very hard work and you have only two solutions: keep your eye 24/7 on your cat, or have an artificial Christmas tree.

Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | They seem more rambunctious at night. We do have artificial trees and they stil get into them. Thanks for the response

polachicago (7880) | 4 years ago | Ok, my kitten is very active at night. It makes my dogs and my boyfriend apset. I am not, but I have Christmas tree with lights outside. Inside only things my kitten won't destroy. Next solution, get small gate and keep your cats away from room with Christmas tree. We all love our animals, don't we?

4. Lydia1901 (15711) | 4 years ago | You can't, they'll do everything bad to it. It's a curse.
| |
| |
|
|
Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | I don't want to hear that. I have 3 trees for them to destroy. Do you have cats? I don't want to be cursed. Surely there is something out there don't you think? Maybe I should patent something to help out. There has to be someone out there with a solution.

5. shooie (3548) | 4 years ago | This will be the first year we've had our cat over christmas so could be interesting with the tree. But there is a spray you can get at like walmart and probably pet stores that you spray in area's you don't want your pets to go. I'm think about getting a can because am more worried about my dogs getting in it than my cat...lol...good luck and or if you find another way to keep them out let me know

Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | I will have to look for it. I heard about a ring that goes on the bottom of the tree to keep them away from it but I have never been able to find one or anyone else who knows about it. I will let you know if I find anything. You may be suprised that the cat will be more likely to cause you problems they think the ornaments are toys. What kind of dog and cat do you have?

6. kush12 (287) | 4 years ago | try putting a ring of pepper around the tree that should keep them away from it.
| |
| |
|
|
Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | What type of pepper would that be? Black pepper or dried peppers?
| |
|
|
JoyfulOne (4248) | 4 years ago | I use black pepper and sprinkle it on the lower branches of the tree. I have 3 cats that are playful, and this works successfully for me. I have a large tree in the living room, and a 2' tree in the kitchen, and one in the bedroom. They will lay under the trees, but after nosing them once they just leave them alone. You cannot tell the branches have the pepper on them, I just take my shaker off the table and sprinkle some on. I tried the ring around the tree on the floor, but you can see it, so I like doing it this way better. Also, when I hang the lower ornaments, I take the little wire that holds them and pinch both ends closed, that way if they bat at the ornament it will not come off. I usually use non-breakable bulbs and ornaments for the first foot up the tree.

7. sbeauty (4443) | 4 years ago | Our only solution to this was to quit putting up a tree. We got tired of the cats knocking them over. My stepson solved the problem at his house by putting a rope around the tree and nailing it to the wall. I've also seen a tree that is flat on one side that hangs on the wall and could be placed above where the kitties could reach.

8. omega007 (7249) | 4 years ago | All cats seem to love the christmas tree. I remeber how 2 of them actually hide in the tree and let me search the whole house before making a noise. I yell at them to come down and they did. But unfortunately a few hours later one of them gone up the others try to follow. My brother brought 2 Rubber Santa Claus which when you squeeze them they make a noise which frighten the cats. I put the Santa under the tress but they seem to go around them like sneaking up behind them and went up. So I had my brother brought in a few more to make like soldier protecting something. eventually they can't get near the tree to climb up.

Mommamea (712) | 4 years ago | I had thought of putting something in front the tree but figured they would climb it. I guess I'm not the only one with the problem. Thanks

| 9. ancient_whispers (89) | 4 years ago | There are some scents like citrus that cats really dislike; if you think it's a good idea, you could try to spray something citrus-scented around the base of your tree. The only problem is that they might refuse to go *anywhere* near that part of the room for a long time afterward. I suggest keeping an eye on your kitties and when they go for the tree, plan a punishment system. My cat (she's 3) likes to lie under the artificial tree but (thankfully) doesn't bother it too much.
