I'm not sure of your question. Other than the unselfish acts of both Jim and Della. Each giving up their prize possessions for the others pleasure. His watch for her hair comb, Her hair for his watch chain.

That story, was my first favorite story. We had to read it in elementary school and I've never forgotten it.

O.Henry masterfully conveys the couple's poverty, lack and love without needing a whole lot of paper to get his point across.

The love the husband and wife have for each another leads them to give up their most precious earthly possessions just to please the other. It's beautiful.

They each could have simply said, "Oh well, hope next Christmas is better," but they went fully for each other.

The gift O. Henry possessed is simply phenomenal.
