can't access local computer when network cable is unplugged  |

 hi all.. I'm having this problem: I can't access shared folders on my own computer when the network cable is unplugged.
Here are the conditions:
1. I'm using winXP Pro SP2
2. I'm sharing a folder on D:\Data with the name Data
3. My computer's name is SERVER
4. When I'm connected to a network, I can access the shared folder using \\server\data
Now, when I'm not connected to a network (the cable is unplugged), I can't access \\server\data. It says that the network path is not found.
What should I do so I can access the shared folder on my local computer using \\server\data when I'm not connected to any network?

When the network cable is unplugged, I can't access the shared folder on my own computer using the address \\server\data
This should be able to be done as I did it once, now I've just reinstalled my operating system and I forgot how to do it. | |

There is NO way you can do for connect to your computer network without login on that network first. imagine how you can control something without materia to transfer on there. It's like you are using internet without internet connection. oh man...

I have understood your problem. You mean to say that you can not access your folder at all when you pull the plug. hmmm ... that does not sound right. Do you get to see 'my network places'? Are you able to go into that folder?

it's basicaly working on your ethernet card when your ethernet card active (meaning it's connected to hub) it will change the IP address into something you set.
if your ethernet card not active (you unplug the card) the IP will change automaticaly into 127.0.0.1, Now Imagine when you setting your shared folder.. your IP is EX:192.168.1.1 then when you unplug those cards it will become 127.0.0.1
your computer will cannot find the address for 192.168.1.1, meaning//server/data= 192.168.1.1/data (when your ethernet card active) it's like looping on programing your computer WHEN in condition 127.0.0.1 and you type in your explorer address//server/data your computer will looking on//192.168.1.1/data.
That's why I say You can't access it. the easy way if that in your local computer just write your real address. | |
