Do you celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas in your country? |
Here in Germany we do. St. Nicholas was the original Santa Claus. On the night before December 6, kids all over the country put their shoes out for St. Nicholas to fill with sweets, fruit and small presents. Naughty kids get a switch (when my husband was small, he found a carpet beater in his!). There are gorier traditions, such as naughty kids being put into a sack and thrown into the river by the Krampus, but we have firmly convinced our 5 year old son that regardless of what anyone else says, there is no such thing as the Krampus. We don't want the poor little soul to have nightmares...

anglogerman (453) | 4 years ago | Yes, St. Nicholas is scarier than the traditional Western Santa. Some of these traditions trade on fear to make kids behave, which is why we leave some of them out.

6. nannacroc (2370) | 4 years ago | I have heard of this tradition but we've never celebrated it. Saint Nicholas was just added to the Christmas celebrations and Santa comes on Christmas Eve, if you've been good.

7. blossomingflower (415) | 4 years ago | Yes we do have Santa Claus visit our home before the onset of Christmas. That's it. This Santa Claus particularly targets children in a loving, caring and playful manner. Sweets and other gift items are aplenty and distributed in a very pleasant atmosphere. I never heard about Krampus in our place. So we don't have any nighmares too.

anglogerman (453) | 4 years ago | Yes, that's the way it should be. Our son has heard of the Krampus from his kindergarten, but we told him very firmly that there is no such thing.
