Elvis Presley as a weapon of mass destruction |
| |
| In 1958 a newspaper in Communist East Germany gave its opinion that the Americans had come up with Elvis Presley as a psychological weapon, the purpose of which was to "destroy anything bautiful in order to prepare for war"! | | Elvis as a weapon of mass distraction? | | | | |

| | That's too funny. I seriously doubt that Elvis was anything except a singer. Mass destruction? No Way. Mass distraction? Now that's a possibility. Get a lot of people together and do away with them? I think the Communists were grasping at straws for something against the US to throw at their people. What do you suppose they thought of the baby boom during the '50s? A plot to build up the US army of the future? | | | | | | |

| | I shouldn't laugh but cannot help it, because even the communists in East Germany could not have been that silly. Elvis might have been many things but a "psychological weapon". LOL | | | | | | |

| | That's one of the craziest things I've ever heard, but it doesn't surprise me, because rock-and-roll was looked upon as suspicious both here and abroad at that time. I once heard that, when it was said that Elvis was the father of rock-and-roll that he responded by saying that, if this were so, he was going to disown several of his children. He was referring to some of the nasty, noisy songs(?) that came out later in the seventies and beyond. Elvis rocked, growled, yowled, and even screamed at times--but he drew a line between when what was quality and what wasn't. I don't think that there's a single tune that Elvis did that a person couldn't hum to. And he wasn't crude and encouraging people to kill cops, etc. | | | | | | |
