There are lots of great little towns. Winslow, just off the ferry terminal, is a nice small town with cute restaurants and lots going on in the summertime. Port Angeles and Port Townsend are fun waterfront towns to walk around. Sequim is home of the annual Lavender Festival (http://www.lavenderfestival.com/).
As a bonus, if anyone likes wine, there are lots of small wineries which are fun to drop by & do tastings (http://www.northsoundwineries.org). There are also great hikes on the Peninsula - Hurricane Ridge, the Olympic Peninsula rain forest, and Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge.
If you want to go even further, you can take one of several ferries north from Port Angeles to Victoria, Canada, but that's more of a two-day trip...unless you get up very early and come back very late.
