Baby walkers illegal in Canada! |
| |
| I wanted to buy my 11 month old daughter a walker because she's not very mobile yet and it really frustrates her. My mom told me about something that I had when I was a baby called a walker. I went out to look for one and I found out that they're now illegal in Canada because alot of parents were leaving their children unattended in them and they were falling down the stairs. I don't think it's fair that just because a few parents couldn't watch their kids that I can't own one of these. By the same logic everything is dangerous, jolly jumpers, exersaucers, alot of toys, even crawling around. Are they going to make all of these things illegal too? Ha. Other parents, and parents that have owned one of these, what are your thoughts on this? | | graco baby walker | | | | |

| | I actually agree that Walkers should be illegal. So many innocent children have been hurt due to their parents not paying attention. There are much better ways to encourage children to become mobile. Exersaucers and jump-ups are great, but they do not encourage the balance that is needed for walking and standing on their own. Place furniture (sofa, chairs, pills, coffee tables, etc...) closer together so your daughter can move around while holding onto something. She will get it. Frustration is actually a good thing, it shows that she wants to be motivating and it will give her the motivation to do so. | | | | | | |

| | I agree. I saw some nasty walker accidents happen right in front of parents' eyes when I was a kid. The wheels move fast, and it's quite possible for a child to get out of the harness and climb up on them, much faster than anyone would ever expect. It's human nature to look away or attend to a small task (even if it's for 2 seconds). Although some parents may hover and keep their eyes on their child every single second without getting distracted, I don't think it's true for the majority. You don't have to be a negligent parent for a walker accident to happen. Also, they're really only needed for a few weeks. An 11 month will be walking within a month or so anyway. | | | |

| | You mention using furniture, but if the point is that it's dangerous for babies to be let alone in Walkers, by that same standard, wouldn't it be dangerous to let babies walk around furniture where they could fall and split their head open? I don't think the problem is with the device, it's with parents who don't keep a sharp eye on their children. Like in Albuquerque NM where I used to live, 3 and 4 year olds were playing in the streets with no one to watch them, I always tried to keep an eye out if I was outside but they weren't my kids. | | | |

| | I agree with working4theweekend. I think parent's should watch their children, not use something to "babysit" them. Both my kids used walker's, but, I would encourage them to follow me while I did house work. I would not leave them unattended. | | | |

| | It's simple, don't put a baby in a walker and then leave a baby alone. And how can an accident happen in a walker when the parent is right there? Maybe a lazy parent who didn't get off the couch fast enough? Just don't put the walker where stairs are! | | | |

| | I agree Foxxee. It is just common sense, for one, not to use a walker near open stairs. And I didn't hover over my kids when they were in it. I never hover over my kids. I was usually in the kitchen doing dishes and they were playing in the loving room (there is just a small door between the room so you can't see from the kitchen into the rest of the house). But, you know what--if something happened to my kids I only blamed myself. If they knocked something over on themselves or broke something. Hmmm--well maybe I should have moved that earlier. If they fell off the couch--my fault and I dealt with it. I hate to admit it but my 8 month old daughter has fallen down the stairs twice. The first time I didn't realize she was really that mobile. She had just started carwling and I just wasn't thinking about her going off to explore the rest of the house (meaning she had to go past the stairs down to our front door). The second time was completely my fault. I was exhausted and went to make dinner. I forgot to put the gate up on the living room and the other kids followed me, so of course so did the baby. Next thing I hear is her tumbling down the stairs. She didn't get hurt and we both learned a very valuable lesson, lol. I put the gate up all the time now and she stays away from the stairs. | | | |

| | Yep. Kids can fall down the stairs even without a walker. The only thing that will stop all these accidents is if the parents actually watched their kids. | | | |

| | My oldest had one of those. I don't think they should be illegal because a few parents can't keep up with their kids. We actually used ours outside, helped her get accustomed to playing outside. I did not want a child that wanted to stay in the house all the time. It worked she would rather be out there playing. I was looking at getting one of the exersaucer ones for my youngest, but I got one of the Johnny jumpers instead for the time being. Figure she will be crawling soon so she won't need anything like that for long. And they are quite expensive. | | | | | | |

| | When our daughter was a baby she loved her walker. Our house had no steps, and there was no danger of her falling anywhere, even though I would have watched her or put up gates if there were. I can't imagine banning them from everyone because of the carelessness of a few. She got very strong in her walker and was walking on her own at 10 months. They are still legal and for sale here in the U.S. My daughter just bought one for her own baby. | | | | | | |

| | I think that it is wrong to punish the parents who are responsible for irresponsible parents actions, I agree that a child could get hurt easier by crawling, they can crawl to the stairs and fall down. I mean, I can understand a parent turning their back for a second to use the restroom or soemthing, bu that's what the saftey gates are for, put them up at the top of the stair so the child can not fall down the stairs. My son absolutely loved his walker, and I would be very andgry if i went to buy my daughter one and could not, it is madness. You might can check at garage sales, or with friends who have older children, you might can find a good second hand walker for your daughter. | | | | | | |

| | Thats kind of dumb. Walkers being illegal. My sister's used them for their kids. My sisters also used a little jumper thing for their kids, which hung in a door way or something. I live in US, so... I don't know if those things in Canada are... illegal either. | | | | | | |

| | I actually agree that they should be banned. My daughter has one and she would never stay in it anyway, but she is constantly trying to crawl in and out of it. Also, if it was just a few parents that weren't watching their kids there wouldn't be a reason to ban them. | | | | | | |

| | Blame stupid parents for that. Our daughter had one growing up too and was perfectly safe in it. However, because some parents let their kids play in them unsupervised by stairs there are groups that complain about how dangerous they are. | | | | | | |

| | My eldest is 12 now, and even then they were illegal. I found one at a yard sale. the dumb thing is from what has happened i apparantly could have sued the person that sold it to me if I neglected him and he went down the stairs. I always watched my son when he was in it, and he really needed the encouragement and mobility because he had problems at birth. I don't think they should have been banned. Just curiously, do other countries also have the rules about the maximum gap allowed between bars on a crib. My Aunt does foster care and they put another bar betwen every single bar on the crib that my cousin had used as a baby before she could use it for the foster baby. It looked so odd. | | | | | | |
