are they an excuse to drink heavy & take drugs?
I guess that depends on who you are. And if you are one of the people who drink and do drugs you probably don't need an excuse. I think it is the best holiday of the year. You never hear anyone say oh god I hate New years. But somebody always hates Christmas.
