HDTV's Difference between DLP and Plasma?   email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 72/100. ready2earn (220) 6 years ago

Hi guys, as you know HDTV's are now becoming standard and I will be purchasing one in the next few months.

I wanted to know what the differences between DLP and Plasma HDTVs are. DLP HDTV's are significantly cheaper and seem to look as good as some plasmas. Why are they cheaper and what might be a wise decision for the future assuming I'm not made of money (budgeting 3k at most for one). I'd like to get a 50", 58" or 61" TV.

Please enlighten me and I will bake you a cake

HD means high definition quality it means it's better than having a plasma.

DLP should have a brighter, more vivid picture with better viewing angles over a conventional projector screen.

LCD projector will give a big image with decent sharpness, a CRT will give a bit sharper image iirc, but they are bigger machines (and more expensive)

LCD is a "passive" panel, it will last for about 100,000 hours before dying, but they need a backlight to give you a picture you can watch Plasma heats a gas up, doesnt need a backlight but you can get screenburn.

LCD is more prone to motion blur (fast moving objects bluring), backlight bleed and poor black levels (the blacks look grey). Plasma's have problems with burn in (leaving stuff on screen for long times will cause the image to stay on the screen, can be got out with use though), they can have a "red" tint to them. Both technologies are UN economical to run (300+ watts at 42", so i would say that both are bad, LCD are generally smaller (45" and lower, plasma above).

Of the 2 technologies, the expensive Plasma will give you best picture (the new Pioneer PDP-506XDE for example), the colour is awesome, black level is great and the text is very well defined, but i would say an LCD is best overall, at 32" a good one is hard to beat
