Kid arrested for playing with Christmas gift!  email this discussion to a friend?

A fed-up mother had her 12-year-old son arrested for allegedly rummaging through his great-grandmother's things and playing with his Christmas present early.
The mother called police Sunday after learning her son had disobeyed orders and repeatedly taken a Game Boy from its hiding place at his grandmother's house next door and played it. He was arrested on petty larceny charges, taken to the local police station in handcuffs and held until his mother picked him up after church.
"My grandmother went out of her way to layaway a toy and paid on this thing for months," said the boy's mother, "It was only to teach my son a lesson. He's been going through life doing things ... and getting away with it."
Way to go Mama! I don't think our local police would get involved, but it is good to know that somewhere, the police ARE willing to help a parent teach a child a lesson. I feel bad for the great-grandmother who's surprise was ruined by the person it was intended for.

I agree he should learn his lesson. However, it is the mother's fault. If he has been going through life getting away with things, she obviously doesn't know the meaning of the word disciplin. If that had been my child, he never would have done that. And if he did, the punishment would be much greater than just spending a day at the police department.

Thank you so much for the BR! That is sooo cool! I am glad I was able to provide a response which was well thought out and shows my opinion. I stand by what I said completely. There seems to be a few other good responses but I have to say I do disagree with them. Nonetheless, they are good and thanks for sharing your opinions with us.

If I would have disobeyed my mother, I wouldn't of had to worry about waiting for Christmas. It would have gone back to the store.

This child was 12 years old, which is old enough to know better. The Grandmother wasn't the one that got the police involved, the mother was. Maybe she was just tired of the child disobeying.

wow im stunned! i dont really know what to think. yeah the kid needs to obey, but isn't that a bit extreme? gee!!

myLot reputation of 78/100. TAMMY77541 (508)  6 years ago

It sounds like the mother may have been at her whits end. A 12 year old has anough sense to know that come Christmas, the gift is his. Compared to say a 3 year old who may not understand that. I get the impression that the mother was more upset that the Grandmother's efforts weren't appreciated.

i think this is a very good example of kids being tormented in their childhood growing up to be criminals or very violent minded individuals.the boy was going to get the toy anyways.why torment him like this before letting him have it.

myLot reputation of 78/100. TAMMY77541 (508)  6 years ago

This boy was old enough to understand that the game system was intended as a Christmas gift. What you see as torment is really just anticipation. He gets his gift early because he can't stand the anticipation of waiting for Christmas to get his gift? No way. That may work for a toddler, not a 12 year old.

I had a friend turn her son over to the police for shop lifting. The police talked to him, and told him next time they would keep him. Her kids were kind of incorrigible, but at least the police were willing to co operate. The earlier kids learn life lessons, the easier it is for everyone involved.

myLot reputation of 78/100. TAMMY77541 (508)  6 years ago

That is so true, Gerty. Lots of times the police won't get involved until the child is actually old enough for them to do something with. By then, it is too late.
A good example is my niece. She is 8 years old, and actually assaults her teachers! She has done it since she started school. I keep telling her that she can go to jail for hitting people, but it doesn't phase her a bit. The police say they can't do anything until she turns ten! By then I wouldn't put it past her to assault one of them. To make matters worse, her teacher this year is pregnant!
