Grappling in Martial Arts.. When Children are Involved  |

 Do you think young children should be allowed to Grapple? I know that my husband and his instructer were grappling when the instructor took a fall improperly. She broke her leg instantly. How far would you let your child go in Martial arts? My son (age 9) is a yellow belt, and already talking about grappling when he gets his next belt. I am not sure how I will feel about letting him do it.

1.  sedel1027 (12410) | 4 years ago |  To me, this is no different than any other sport. You train to fall correctly and learn the "right" moves, but accidents happen. Even by stepping out on the mat and practing any moves with someone else you take a risk. My fiance has been doing martial arts for over 15 years and recently threw a punch that was blocked and dislocated his pinky knuckle. He isn't happy being hurt, but he knew the risk.

You don't need to worry so much. He's going to get hurt so you need to handle it. If I were him I'd want to go far as I can with it.

Maybe you would feel better talking to the instructor regarding your concerns about the safety of your son with grappling.
Now, I'm sure they are already careful with how they teach them but if it makes you feel better, you should ask or watch a session.
Kids will get hurt, that's what kids do. I think it will be alright.

I am prepared for a broken arm or leg, I just don't want to see anything much worse to happen. I really need to trust that everything will be fine. This is my son's big dream. | |
