My adopted filipino son |
|
The year was 1986. Our family had taken a 6year old girl to the USA from the Cayman Islands. Lynn was a happy girl with lots of spunk. We had her in Indiana for several months. She had been taken from her mother several months earlier and Grandma had asked us to take her. The Caymanian government had made arrangements. Soon, the natural mother found a judge in Europe to grant the custody of Lynn to her natural mother. We sent her back to Cayman. We were devastated.
We had already been approved by the county in Indiana to adopt. They had our name and our records. They had a filipino boy on their hands. He had been brought to the USA by another family in Ohio, and when they got him, they did not want him. The county in Ohio was trying to find a home for him and noticed our situation.
He became our second son, our third child, in December 0f 1986. His language was not too good, having been a street kid in the Manila area and having learned Tagalog there. Since my wife and I were both school teachers, we took him and helped him to learn English.
His age was not known, but doctors guessed him to be 8 or 9 years of age, having made X-rays of his hands to help determine an approximate age.
He was such a happy kid, the class clown always. Although 8 or 9 years of age, he was put into second grade materials at school. He quickly improved and began using fourth and fifth grade materials as his English got better.
At age 14 he was naturalized and is now a US citizen, living in Indiana. He is now married with 3 children of his own. I am so proud of this guy.

harcab (983) | 4 years ago | As a former missionary, I don't have much of a social security income. The Philippines is a cheaper place to live than the USA. Also, I hate winter and all of the cold weather activities. It's because Todd (my son) is filipino that I even considered moving here.

4. Jestin (496) | 4 years ago | Oh wow! It's a very touching story. You helped and even took into your family someone regardless of his race. Very touching. I am filipino too and I'm happy that you're adopted son, though you said he was a streetkid before you knew him, makes you proud now. We salute you and your wife. God bless you both!

harcab (983) | 4 years ago | I appreciate your kind words. Race is not a factor with me, being a former missionary and working with people of most races from time to time. For that matter, I don't think I have expressed what race I am a part of. I am part American Indian (the red man) and part Caucasian.

5. moneymind (7551) | 4 years ago | thats a good story, but i seem to gather that some people who wanted to adopt a child base on your post that they seem just to be buying a merchandise that when they see the goods that they have order is not of there taste they just tossed it away. like the family who i do not know how they manage to bring the child to america but then did not want the child for what ever reason they have. thank goodness that you are there to become the childs father. greetings. : )

8. irfan123 (1868) | 3 years ago | I wish it was...adoptions are so expensive. My husband and I have been trying for almost 3years now, and sadly we lost a baby. I would love to adopt, there are so many children out there that need loving parents. Its just too expensive upfront for us.

harcab (983) | 3 years ago | Adopting an older child is cheaper and easier, especially the kids on the list of problem kids.
