Pain killers, how horrible!!!!  email this discussion to a friend?

My wife suffers from pain here and there and takes ‘painkillers’ very frequently. I made this search for her. Here it is. Experts agree that, for most people, there's no harm in taking: NSAIDs, ( non steroidal ant inflammatory pain relievers) to get relief from the occasional headache, fever, or muscle ache. Indeed, according to the American Gastroenterological Association, on any given day more than 30 million Americans use NSAIDs to soothe headaches, sprains, arthritis symptoms, and other daily discomforts,. But these useful pain relievers also raise the risk of ulcers and heart problems in some people. Should you take an NSAID every day if you have arthritis or chronic pain?
Key Points in Making the NSAID Decision
Consider the following when making your decision: Althouh NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are a common class of over-the-counter and prescription painkiller. You should never take any over-the-counter medicine regularly without discussing it with your doctor. Most over-the-counter painkillers should not be used for more than 10 days. NSAIDs have side effects, possible risks of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects and allergic reactions. The risks of NSAIDs have been highlighted in the media recently. But it's important to understand that, for many people, NSAIDs are a safe and effective treatment. The key is to work with your doctor. Together, you can weigh the benefits and risks and decide on the best treatment in your case. All NSAIDs are not alike. They can have very different pros and cons. Talk to your doctor about the NSAID that might work best for you. NSAIDs can appear in unlikely places. For instance, many over-the-counter medicines for colds and the flu contain doses of these pain relievers. Make sure you know the ingredients of any medicine you use. There are alternatives to NSAIDs. Many people who can't take NSAIDs benefit from acetaminophen. Other options for people with severe chronic pain, are prescription narcotics.. Some find that physical therapy, weight loss (if overweight), biofeedback, yoga, meditation, and acupuncture can also reduce their pain. In some people, complete pain relief isn't possible. But in such cases, you can focus on reducing your pain so that it doesn't interfere with your life. Several are no longer sold because of concerns about their side effects.
How NSAIDs Work?
When you injure yourself, the damaged tissue releases certain chemicals. These chemicals cause the tissue to swell, and they amplify the feeling of pain. NSAIDs work by blocking the effects of these chemicals. As a result, you get less swelling and less pain.
What Are the Side Effects of NSAIDs?
The side effects, and the benefits vary. Some of the more important risks are:Heart attacks and strokes. Experts believe that all NSAIDs, (except aspirin) have the potential to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, aspirin can lower the risks of heart attacks and strokes because it reduces the risk of blood clots. High blood pressure. All NSAIDs have the potential to raise high blood pressure. However, because aspirin has such good effects on the cardiovascular system, you doctor may ask that you take it especially if you are at risk for heart attack or stroke. Heartburn, ulcers, and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Most NSAIDs increase the risk of GI problems. Kidney damage. NSAIDS can be damaging to the kidneys in some people. Allergic reactions. NSAIDs can cause allergic reactions, resulting in wheezing, hives, facial swelling, and shock. Dangerous side effects may be more common in people with asthma, especially if they also have sinus problems or nasal polyps -- tissue growths on the inside of the nasal cavity. Many NSAIDs are not safe for pregnant women, especially in the last three months. Children and teenagers should not take aspirin because it's associated with the serious disease Reye's syndrome. Most over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers do not mix with alcohol. If you take an NSAID, including aspirin, just one drink a week can increase your risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. People who have three or more drinks a night should not use NSAIDs.
Friends, consult your doctor and take your own Decision on NSAIDs!!! Please comment.

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention

A rare symptom can be Yellow eyes or skin

Overdose can cause Diarrhea; increased sweating; loss of appetite; nausea or vomiting; stomach cramps or pain; swelling, pain, or tenderness in the upper abdomen or stomach area

People should always ask their Doctor about any medications that are prescribed and if buying "over the counter" should talk to the pharmacist/chemist to make sure they know the potential side effects as well as any possible interaction with other medications they are taking.

I seldom take any medication for headaches, but then I do take a few prescription medications for other conditions. I make sure that everything I take does not have an adverse effect on anything else that I am taking. A lot of people take medicines, without asking the relevant questions. If the patient is not comfortable talking to their doctor about adverse reactions from medications, it is time to find a doctor they can talk to.

Thanks for sharing this information with us, and it might be of help to people who are not as lucky as I am with my Doctor and Pharmacist/Chemist. :)

I always rough it out when i'm in minor pain, i don't like painkillers and i would never consider taking them since they are not a solution to the problem that causes the pain. Maybe i have a high pain threshold or something but i usually deal with the pain by simply ignoring it.

Good for you, I'm with you. We do not need to be flooding our systems with all these pills and potions that were created in a lab somewhere. They are simply too dangerous, can lead to addiction, and have a high probability of causing other illnesses/diseases just by taking them.

yes i agree with you cause i have been once addicted to it and i tell you its not funny all

Viagra cancels painkiller side effects, but might have side effects of its own

28 October 2005

The impotence drug Viagra could be used to block gastric inflammation caused by drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen, report researchers.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, ibuprofen, and indomethacin, are effective against inflammation, but their clinical use is limited by potential gastric side effects, including stomach ulcers. Now, pre-clinical data from Brazil suggests that patients who would otherwise benefit from regular doses of NSAIDs could avoid the risk of gastric damage.

NSAIDs prevent pain and inflammation by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, which produce prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are involved in a number of inflammatory processes. COX-1 disruption is thought to have a negative effect on the prostaglandin-regulated mucous lining of the gastrointestinal tract, while COX-2 inhibition provides pain relief.

Camila Santos and Marcellus Souza at the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil investigated whether Viagra (sildenafil) could protect the gastrointestinal tract in rats dosed with the NSAID indomethacin. The indomethacin reduced gastric blood flow and increased the adhesion of inflammatory white blood cells, two possible precursors to gastric side effects. Sildenafil corrected both of these effects, possibly through its nitric oxide-generating properties.

Since both sildenafil and NSAIDs are already licensed, human trials would progress rapidly, says Adriano Rossi from the MRC Centre for Inflammation Research at the University of Edinburgh.

Rossi welcomes the findings, but notes that this treatment to reduce one set of side effects might come with side effects of its own. ‘Ideally the dose would be regulated such that it only had significant effects on the stomach,’ Rossi told Chemistry World. ‘However, side effects like unwanted erections are a possibility.’

Attempts to inhibit COX-2 alone with drugs such as the withdrawn NSAID Vioxx have not provided the solution (Chemistry World, March 2005, p10). Meanwhile Viagra is currently in clinical trials for hypertension, and shows pre-clinical promise in heart attack, stroke, diabetes and congestive heart failure. Helen Carmichael

Well, NSAID's aren't really "painkillers" like the traditional term. They are just anti-inflammatories, not opiates or addictive pills that actually numb you to pain. Theese just alleviate pain. They aren't addictive like real painkillers, don't make you groggy or doped up. They're also over teh counter, not prescription. These are drugs like ibuprofen, Advil, Excedrin, etc.

The only danger is from overdose or dosing with alcohol. If you use them like you're supposed to, then you're fine.
