Micro waved water - a MUST read |
| |
| A 26-year old decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he told me he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he note d that the water was not boiling, but instantly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face, which may leave scarring. He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as: a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a teakettle. GENERAL ELECTRICALS response: Thanks for contacting us. I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it. To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding anything into it. | | | | | |

| | Wow I had no idea that that could happen when you microwaved water. I feel bad for that guy that had it explode in his face that had to have been a horrible thing. This was a very good informative post and I am glad you posted it. | | | | | | |

| | This is called superheated water. A trick to prevent such things happening is to stir the water before putting it in to the microwave, this keeps the molecules moving so they don't super heat. And then do not heat plain water longer then 2 minutes. This should prevent this catastrophe from happening. This is a very serious thing that can be prevented. | | | | | | |

| | You got it right. I have read about this happening to another person, but he was trying to boil tea water and when he dipped the tea bag into the superheated water, it blew up to his face. That phenomena is also true to soda cans that had been shaken. If you try to open the can of soda right after it is shaken you get a loud swish and sometimes, the soda will just blow up into your face. One way of preventing that? just tap on the soda can 3 times on the topside and even if the can has been shaken before opening, it will not blow into your face. Reason, the water bubbles, i.e. carbonated water molecules tend to be in the water itself and so when pressure is released, when you open the soda can, the air molecules trapped in the soda rises fast causing it to be released into the air with the soda. But when when you tap on the can's upper side, the molecules, (built-up air) rises to the top of the can and releases without the fluid content. This can be demonstrated if you put in some soda on a glass, and you will see the air molecules clinging to the side of the glass, but when you tap on the glass, the air bubbles rises to the top of the glass. Try it! | | | |

| | There is only some truth to your post. This CAN hapen but only in certian cups and glasses. Anything with a smooth surface that bubble cannot attach to and the opening at the top is much smaller than the base of the cup/glass/bowl has a risk of doing this. So it is not a good idea to heat water in a coffee mug, meausring cup, etc. Mythbusters did a segment on this no that long ago. | | | | | | |

| | wellits not the cups fault if any1 of u ever watched mythbusters on discovery they showed that how liquids could get super heated in a microwave oven n when u stir em or put anything in it it will explode.....this happens because of the way the microwaves heat up liquids never use em to boil liquids, never put metal in em it wont blow but it will reduce ur ovens life n dont boil eggs n yes do not heat jawbreakers in them either | | | |

| | Mythbusters rock. I'm so glad they did this topic. I was wondering if they ever would because it sounded right up their alley. I first heard about it watching my local news a few years ago. Pretty scary stuff. They actually reproduced it for the camera and it was scary to see the water just go everywhere. I am very careful now when I use the microwave to heat water (like for hot chocolate) and I make sure the kids are out of the room when I take it out and I stand behind the door of the microwave, just in case my initial movement causes the water to explode. I used to boil water all the time when I was in college to make mac and cheese. The instructions said to heat the water for 5 minutes in the bowl. I probably would have started cooking more on the stove back then if I had seen that report. | | | |

| | This was a great post- Thanks for putting it in. I boil a cup of water in my microwave for 5-6 minutes straight in order to clean the microwave. The steam created makes it easy to just wipe off the splattered food debris without needing to use any cleaners (I hate when the oven smells like PineSol!). I'll have to rethink this practice now- I'll be afraid to do it. So, how does everybody else clean their microwaves? | | | | | | |
