A fear of Alzheimer's Disease |
| |
| I am 65 years old. I have a good mind, a good education, a lot of good experiences in life. However, I find a history in my family of Alzheimer's Disease. My mother had it and her mother before her. What are my chances of getting it? What can I do about preventing it? I understood that taking antioxidant vitamins can help. I am now taking 1000 units of both vitamin C and vitamin E every day. I have done that now for nearly two years. Any suggestions would be appreciated. You can also print experiences you have had with Alzheimer's patients. | | | | | |

| | At 65 if you've experienced no related problems, you may not have it. I consider that a good sign. Yes, I've read antioxidants help too. 1,000 mg of C is fine, but if you're also taking 1,000 of E, that's a bit much in my opinion. E thins the blood. I think 400 units is appropriate, certainly no more than 800 units. Keep doing your research on the vitamins and other natural alternatives. I think that's your best bet right now. Modern medical research is getting closer to a cure, but I think it's 5-10 years away. | | | | | | |

| | Just keep your mind busy, I have worked in Nursing Homes for over 20 years and was a program director for an Alzheimer's unit. We would give them vit. e everyday and they ate a lot of blueberries. We worked on mind activities to remember past events we did a lot of crossword puzzles and we did a lot of trivia. Just keep busy and don't worry it does seem to run in some families but I took care of a gentlemen that his mother but his grandparents did not and non of his brothers and sisters had it either. If you have any questions feel free to ask. | | | |

| | Im sorry to hear your worried about it. Does it normally run in your family? Because it does in mine and my mom is worried she is going to get it or if she forgets alittle thing then she figures shes getting it. I dont think any human should have to live with this disease. Its to hard for the family and the person who suffers from it. I really do hope a cure is found someday soon. | | | | | | |

| | Even though many are advocating a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet to prevent Alzheimer's, based on the dubious notion that cholesterol causes beta-amyloid accumulation, which, in turn, causes Alzheimer's disease, the use of this deceptive and out-dated model shouldn't prevent us from taking real, science-based precautions against Alzheimer's disease. It appears highly evident that DHA-depletion, insulin resistance, increased oxidation, and perhaps activity levels and homocysteine levels, are all controllable factors that are partial causes in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Genetics plays a factor, but genes are clearly only part of the picture. It makes sense to increase our consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, saturated fats, and sources of DHA such as egg yolks from pastured chickens and cod liver oil, and to decrease our consumption of carbohydrates and most polyunsaturated fatty acids. A high-fat diet may help by preventing insulin resistance and by contributing neuro-protective ketone bodies as well. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTS ) are also effective in increasing ketone bodies regardless of other dietary factors,33 so the addition of coconut oil to the diet, the best food source of MCTs, might also be a protective factor. Naturally, avoiding processed foods or cooking materials that contain metals like aluminum and excitotoxins like MSG are also reasonable precautionary measures. And lastly, staying active appears to protect against Alzheimer's, reminiscent of the old adage, "use it or lose it." | alzheimer.

| | Thank you so much for your post! It is very informative and a great find.:) I have some of the same concerns that harcab has because there also is a genentics factor in my family as well. My mother and her mother both developed altzheimers and I feel that I may be at risk too. Your response post to harcab really did help and provided me with a lot of useful information. Kudos to you! | | | |

| | I would keep getting regular check-ups if this is in your family and take good care of yourself. I don't know how it works for Alzheimers, but I have heard that keeping the mind busy by learning new things and doing activities such as crossword puzzels etc..helps to prevent dementia | | | | | | |
