what other material can be used for crochet

i use only cotton thread, but i have seen it been done even in other materials like even pieces of cloth. do u know any other material.

I have done crochet using strips of waste cloth to make doormats. In this way you can make use of the old clothes.

I use cotton thread for doiles and tablecloths, stuff like that. I mostly crochet afghans and use worsted weight year. My grandmother did crochet rugs and used cloth for that. I have never done that though, maybe I'll look into it though.
