Excellent question. My son, now 6, was not easily potty trained. Finally I got him to sit on the toilet but at 2 1/2 he was still not wanting to stand up. I tried everything and it just wouldn't work. We live in a very small area and we are what most call "hillbillies" or "rednecks" so one day while camping my husband went out to pee, my son now almost 3 years old, walked up beside him and started to do the same. From that day on it just kinda came natural for him. My aunt has always suggested letting boys go out the back door. It is "fun" to them and makes them want to stand up to use the restroom. You may try telling your son that it is how big boys do. Also, you could go to americanbaby.com for some extra tips.

I would like to start potty training my son as soon as he can walk on his own without help... But I hear that we should wait much longer...?? I guess boys comes to the conclusion themselves that they are ready! :( I was hoping to start early, however it doesn't to try.

As far as teaching him to stand..I am leaving that part to my husband and I'd rather wait until my son is potty trained, rather than confuse him.

When he can stand alone and balance himself then he can start to learn in a potty and as he grows moves on to the regular toilet. Of course you will have to show him how to hold and point.

I just got done doing this with my little boy. I started by asking him if he wanted to pee like daddy? and of course he did.. he wants to do EVERYTHING like his daddy, so he would watch his daddy pee, and then we put a step stool next to the toilet and let him have a try. He loved it. and it's easier to get him to pee in public now that he can stand. Also, word of advice, have a towel handy because they make a mess, and they tend to get it down thier legs as well. Also it helps if you teach them to tap thier "pee-pee" (that's what we call it) (: to get the extra pee out of it before they put on their underwear, otherwise they will get wet underwear. Good luck!

I started trying when my son was 2, but he did not take to it very well. I talked to his dr. and he told me with boys they will decided, they are a little harder than girls to potty train. He did not have any males around to help with this training, so a friend of mine let me use her older boys and husband to help my son. He didn't do it on his own until he was 3 which I am told is about standard for a boy.
