Do you think it's wise to let your partner teach you how to ski? |
|
Everyone says you shouldn't let your partner teach you how to ski/drive etc. as it always leads to arguments, but I'd rather have someone close look after me when I mess up, rather than a complete stranger. What do you think?

1. skiprincess (101) | 3 years ago | I didnt have anyone i knew that could teach me to ski - so i had to have an instructor. The benefits of a professional are that they are trained to help the novice skier - they have seen so many people make mistakes - its all part of learning to ski - they wont laugh at you. plus they have first aid training. Yes, its true - having your partner teaching you can lead to rows - would you really want fall out with them on holiday??? you cant really do that with an instructor - just imagine if you stuffed up, the instructor wouldnt be able to scream at you "I told you to do it like that, you stupid 'so-and-so'". The up-side of a partner teaching you is that it doesnt cost anything....except a few beers afterwards. whichever way you go, have fun!!!

suewhitter (1012) | 3 years ago | I suppose I'm lucky that my husband is one of the most patient and easy-going people I've ever met, so actually he's been really good. I've seen others having huge rows though, so it obviously doesn't suuit everyone!

2. irisheyes (2931) | 3 years ago | Many years ago, when I was a teenager, my father took me out to teach me to drive. Unfortunately, it was when he'd just gotten a new car which he didn't have the opportunity to do often. There were awful rows which usually wound up with me slamming the car door and walking home. (sometimes a couple miles) It was years before I learned to drive and the whole experience made me opt for professional instruction in just about everything since then. Family and friends are okay for fine tuning but for me, it's better to have the basics from a pro.

suewhitter (1012) | 3 years ago | Actually, I got my dad to pay for professional driving lessons - I don't even think I was given the option of learning from him. Probably just as well - he was a terrible driver!

| 3. infojeff (58) | 3 years ago | It is nice to go skiing with someone you know, but that does not mean they know how to teach you how to do it.
Sure, have them help you get started, but also later take lessons from a professional so you develop the correct skiing habits and form.

suewhitter (1012) | 3 years ago | You're right, it's no good unless your partner is either a qualified instructor or extremely expert at what they do (my husband's the latter). The thing is, even if they're qualified to teach you, should they? I guess it's a little like your mum teaching you at school or something like that.

4. Freespirit (176) | 3 years ago | Unfortunately I don't ski, so cant say. However, I know that there are lots of arguments with Husbands teaching their wives to drive, they seem to have forgotten what it was like to be a learner. When they learnt to drive, the traffic was probably a lot easier than it is today. I think it's best to get an Instructor to teach especially women are better, then fill in and get lots of hours in between by having a friend help out, as all the hours with an Instructor can be expensive.

suewhitter (1012) | 3 years ago | At least my hubby's a bit more sympathetic than an instructor would be when I mess up! I probably wouldn't swear so much at an instructor though...

5. janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | i don't know how to ski and i've never had anybody offer to teach me, but i can say about driving is that it's good to have your partner teach you cos he tends to be more patient AND you don't have to pay him hahaha. also, i've had boyfriends who taught me how to drive, and it went great.:) so i say, go for it!

| 7. olivertwist (13) | 3 years ago | I was originally taught to ski (and supposedly to improve my skiing) by my ex-boyfriend. 25 years later and I'm still having to take lessons to unlearn the bad habits he taught me. Unless your partner is a qualified instructor, I'd stay away.
