Do you trust a private seller or a used car dealer?

If you are going to buy a used car, are you quicker to trust a used car dealer or will you buy it privately from someone you know or even from someone in the newspaper? I have bought them all three ways. When going to someone I don't know, I take a friend with me who knows about cars and have them look at it for me. I have also had a mechanic friend of mine look at a car I bought from a used car dealer. It didn't matter, it was still a lemon, but it wasn't my friend's fault. They just hid the faults of the car too well at the dealer. BE CAREFUL.
