Here'e one for the Australians!
On this day in 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia came into being.
Seventy years later in 1971 the first One-Day International Cricket match was played in Australia.
Cricket related news does not come easily from a whingeing Pom like me in view of the total whitewash in the Test series.
Boo Hoo!

Sadly, as a pom, I have to admit that you are right. Ah well, there's always the next series!

Actually there has been a whitewash twice in the history of The Ashes played between Australia and England. The first was in the 1920-1921 test and the second 2006-2007 test and GUESS WHAT? Australia was the victor in both cases. LOL

Shouldn't really rub salt into the wounds now should I Noot54, but I was absolutely delighted with the outcome for more reasons that one. Shane Warne took the wicket that gave the Ashes back to us. Glenn McGrath bowled out the last of the pommies today in the final match of the series. Justin Langer was batting when we won the 5th match today. All three of these wonderful Australian cricketers retired today.

All credit to the poms though as they formed a Guard of Honour for Justin Langer when he came out onto the field to bat today for the last time. Then after the match was over, hand shakes etc all round, the poms left the field to allow the Aussies their moment of glory. Even the Barmy Army saluted the Aussies today.

The best bit is the great Ian Botham making the comment that the Aussies could not win as they were playing with a "Dad's Army", naming 5 players. Well our cricketers did win and 3 of the "Dad's Army" retired today all of whom made a great contribution to this test series.

I do thank you for sharing the information about the first One-Day International Cricket match being played on the 70th Anniversary of our great country coming of age. :)

Oops forgot to mention Noot54 that I am still considering what my response will be to your other discussion about the definition of a loser. Several things do come to mind just now, but will be kind and leave it for a day or two. LOL
