What is a "goth" and why do they dress up all in black with white facial make up and black lipstick? Well, I am an "old" goth. I say "old" because I still have the style of clothing hanging up in my closet. I aquired to become goth because I was inspired by music, culture, and friends around me.
Goth; to dress in black, to listen to certain types of music (such as The Cure, Tones On Tail, Collide, Depeche Mode, Sisters Of Mercy, Skinny Puppy). A Goth person is ecsentric in fashion such as a Goth woman will wear black fishnet under black flowing dresses and wear costume jewelry that resembles diamonds. Goth culture avoids sunshine that may sunburn their skin. Some Goth people are senister thinkers, always thinking of death or sometimes dying, but not all Goth people think this way. Black lipstick would represent depression in their moods as the true color red lipstick would mean that one is happy. They enjoy history of Edwardian times or the roaring 1920's. Most Goth culture will turn to punk rock culture as some will remain low key (for instance myself). They enjoy going to places such as a walk downtown to look in shop windows of antique stores and art galleries.
Most Goth people like their time alone to write down their thoughts. They collect pictures of friends in picture albums and strange books found at old bookstores. Many Goths enjoy decorating thier rooms with concert posters from the concerts they have been to and music with technology behind it is like a lust or craving.
Dressing Goth doesn't mean that they are dark creatures that only come out at night and think only of dying. Most goths are now lawyers, doctors, writers, and musicians. They are also parents and they enrich their family life with moral standards.
Some may still dress in black and wear the make up. They travel through Europe to enjoy culture. Their fashion sense is to cover up their skin, and to be modest. I never met a Goth that wasn't embarrassed by dismodesty!

Well not all goths dress in black or dark colors. There are a lot that dress in white... old wedding dresses etc. My fiance was goth in the 80s when the real goth culture existed. I was goth in the 90s but I dressed in dark colors, had red, black or purple hair. I had a cape. I liked DM, the Cure, the Smiths, Sisters of Mercy, the Beloved, Skinny Puppy, Clan of Xymox, etc. I like old black and white silent films and horror movies. I like to dance, to keep a journal. Never had concert posters on my wall...my room had old creepy victorian furniture and bedding and decorations.
And where I come from - and my fiance too - modesty was not the case. At the places around here - there are some goths that wear vinyl... or just show up in hot pants with electrical tape over their nipples... or wear ripped up clothes and garters.

Very Interesting discussion! I think that for most of the new "young" goths, at least here in Italy, "Gothic" is erely and unfortunately only a fashion and not a way of living, a culture or a way of thinking (and being) as you describe and as it is for most of the "old" goths.
