I would suggest that you first determine what you can afford then what primarily will you use it for. That will determin if you want a point and shoot a pro-sumer or a digital slr. if you just want something that you can take with you anywhere "just in case" then a simple point and shoot would do you just fine. however, if on the other hand your a "pro" photographer and this is your first digital camera then you will be looking at a high end digital SLR with multiple lenses.

As far as make or model do a google search on the reviews on the specific make & model(s) of camera that you are interested in. I did all of the above before I bought my digital camera. I also determined what features it "had" to have.

The Nikon D200 is my camera of choice, I love Nikon. But it is also expensive, and it depends what type of thing you will use it for.

There isn't one best brand of cameras. There are alot of cmareas that are great from diffrent makers. It's just a matter of what features your looking for. Just make sure you research and compare cameras and get a camera that fits your needs.

I have the Cannon Rebel digital slr and I love it! It takes gorgeous photos and is easy to use as it also has an automatic setting as well as the more artistic setting. I also love the "sports" setting because I have small children who are always in motion and I can catch them in the act jumping, running, rolling, whatever it happens to be!

I suggest cameras by leading & well-known brands like Nikon, Canon, Sony & Kodak, Olympus etc. I myself own a Kodak DX 7590, a digital SLR. I wanted a dSLR with high opical zoom capabilities & 5 MP.
