How many seasons are there of the new Battlestar Galactica?

I have just started watching this season but do not know how far behind I am with the story.Is this only the second season?

We are currently in the mid-season of the THIRD season of BSG. The program took a short leave for the holidays and will be returning January 21 on the Sci-Fi Network. The first episode, starting as a mini-series aired on December 8 of 2003. The response of the program was so overwhelming that it became a series in 2005.
