i just wonder why coconuts r used for worshipping Gods?

I think it is because coconuts are considered to be and looks like lord shiva's head. the coconut hair resembles shiva's hair and he 3 depressions on it are similar to 2 eyes and one eye on the forehead of shiva.
But I dont know why people break coconuts in temples.
