| | | 2. marcau (554) | 3 years ago |  One of the most common reasons is to protect the camera lens. It is much cheaper to replace a scratched filter than it is to replace a scratched lens.
Other reasons filters are used are to filter out UV light or to compensate for tungsten or fluroesanct lighting.
A red filter is sometimes used for black and white photography to increase contrast.
