I live in a rural town, and Walmart has brought some property less than 1 mile from my house. My community has set up a website to stop Walmart, but I am not sure what side to take. Has this happen to anyone? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a Walmart close by? I know traffic is going to be horrible, but whatelse should I take into considerations?

I am glad someone asked this question. I like to go to Walmart because I can get almost anything there that I might need, but being from a small town area, I can tell you some of the down side of it too. Since Walmart has come into our area, we have lost many many smaller businesses. We no longer have a McGomery Wards, sorry about the spelling, we have no Sears anymore, Kmart is hanging on by it's teeth, Penny's is gone, our down town looks like a ghost town. At our Walmart you have to almost take a bus to get from your car to the store. The parking lot is set up so weird! So there is the skinny of it. It has to be your decision, but we have had alot of disappointed people here.

You are correct. I did not even think about the other little stores that I paronize now. Walmart will definately force them out.

Thank you for the best response! I really do like Walmart, but it is known for distroying all the smaller businesses in the area. I once heard someone say that in the future the only stores that will be out there are Walmart and Taco Bell! hehehehee

You know its funny how everyone hop on this hate walmart bandwagon. Show me 1 store that has sent you a thanks for your money and loyalty check. Is the city going to put in a store that has walmart prices? Are the local stores going to have the same prices as walmart? Walmart is a great store with cheap prices on quality items. With a exellent return/refund policy. Who compares? Ask your self that. And if you lose your job, what store will you be able to get all your needs? Instead of going from store to store.

You are right about Walmart prices, and their refund policy is A plus compare to the other places.

Where do you do your shopping now? I am assuming it is going to be a Super Walmart - I don't really like super walmarts because they are not very organized from my experience and their produce is not good at all. It is so convenient just to go to one store and get everything you need or go late at night when you forgot something you need, but that all comes at a price. I don't do my grocery shopping at walmart because I would rather drive the extra few miles to winco to get a better selection at better prices. But, it all depends on your town, like the other poster said - all the other stores in her town closed down and that could happen to your town as well. Just look at everything on both sides and make your own choice. I hope I helped!!

Thanks for your input, there is a 24 hours supermarket close by so I am not sure what will happen with Walmart right around the corner. I guess Walmart might force this other supermarket out.
