Any tips on preparing to have a child? email this discussion to a friend?

We're expecting our first child in a few months. For those of you with children, is there any advice you have or anything you wish you'd done differently? Anything is helpful, from baby showers and what to register for, to lamaze, to setting a sleep pattern, to punishment, education...you name it!

Congratulations! Parenthood is a very exciting but frightening time too! Do you have some family that can help you out when you get home? My mother was a big help. I wasn't prepared for the crying. Babies do cry. That doesn't mean they are hungry. Consider temperature (they are used to being in a very warm place) first before automatically feeding him/her. And don't forget to burp! Some late night dramas could have been avoided if we had just remembered to burp the baby!

Congratulations, I wish you loads of luck with your child.

My biggest regret is that I didn't save more money before my kids came along. I would love for them to be able to go to more after school classes and to private schools but I have no spare cash at all.

Congatulations to both of you! As of now you might have given birth. Or if not, here are some tips.. Babies have a strong sense of hearing, just be patient enough to talk to them even if they're inside the womb. Try to avoid shouting. Newborns love to hear their mommy's voice. They recognize you because of that since they cannot see yet.
If your baby is sleeping, try to get some sleep too. I have a lot f things to do everyday, so don't get enough sleep. That sometimes when the baby cries in the middle of the night, i always spill his water, or milk powder on the sheets. Money too is very important but you must learn how to be frugal and not to overspend it on things that are not important. Like, if you were to buy clothes buy only few, because during occasions, baby clothes are usually given as presents. And they grow up very fast.

Congratulations, brimia! Number one advice duing pregnancy is to take prenatal vitamins- I'm sure your doctor already has you on them.

As for baby registry, look for a really good stroller and infant car seat. Also, my boppy pillow was God-send for those first few months of feeding. One thing I never used was my changing table- it wasn't convenient to go upstairs every time I had to change my babies.

I would also recommend signing up for childbirth classes at your hospital. It's a great way to meet other expectant couples and it help you know what to expect once you go into labor.

I read a ton of preganncy books during my pregnancies. My favorites were "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" and "The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy". I would also recommend signing up on an online pregnancy message board like IVillage- you will meet lots of friends, swap pregnasncy stories and it's a grat way to post questions on things you're unsure about.

Good luck, brimia and keep us posted!!
