Preferred shipping carriers |
|
Sellers, do you have a particular shipping carrier that you use for all of your auctions, or do you prefer to offer a variety of services for your buyers to choose from? Personally, I prefer to ship only by USPS Priority Mail because I have yet to lose a package that is shipped through the United States Postal Service. I always add a Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation tag to the packages I send out, because I can forward the tracking number to the buyer to show that their item has been shipped, and because I can prove that it was delivered if any problems arise. I shipped an item by UPS once, and it was damaged in transit. That never happened with any of the parcels I sent out with USPS.
As a buyer, I usually look for listings that offer shipping by USPS. I have had a miserable time with UPS lately, so I avoid auctions that only offer shipping through UPS. Sometimes the seller is willing to ship by a method other than those listed, so it doesn't hurt to ask. But if the item is just one of those "I wants," sometimes it's better to wait until it's available from a seller that will ship by your preferred method. You may even be able to get it cheaper if you wait than if you buy it immediately.

akuseru (1854) | 3 years ago | The most important thing that you can do while shipping items you've sold is to pack them securely and make sure they can be tracked if you have any problems with the buyer claiming they never showed up. Also, I like to stick something on my auctions stating that I am not responsible for any damaged or lost items if the buyer chooses to not insure the package. Thankfully I haven't had any problems with losses or damages aside from the one that shipped with UPS!

3. cwgrlsarefun (1358) | 3 years ago | This was very helpful to me as I have just recently started selling on ebay and have often wondered which was the better way to ship items. I would like to thank you for the tips that you gave in your discussion too. I have noticed that for me it is usually cheaper to ship usps in my area also.

akuseru (1854) | 3 years ago | Well, the pricing does depend on where the package is shipping to as well as the weight. The great thing about USPS Priority Mail is that they offer flat-rate envelopes and boxes, so as long as your item fits in the box you can send something heavy for much less than you might spend if the price was based on the weight. Also, the boxes and envelopes are available for free at your local post office, or you can order your boxes online at http://www.usps.com and have them delivered right to your door. You can also purchase postage for them online and schedule a carrier pickup, so there's no need to go to the post office and wait in line.

akuseru (1854) | 3 years ago | I wonder if it was one of those cases where the postal carrier forgot to leave a notice in the mailbox notifying her that it was being held at the post office, or if she just chose not to go pick it up there. I've had to go pick up packages at the post office before, and a couple of them I wouldn't have known about if the tracking information hadn't shown the attempted delivery.

6. oldbuddy (5748) | 3 years ago | I used to hassle all that stuff, now I just sell Digital Information Products and ship them my Instant Internet Delivery for free.
When I do need to ship hard goods of some kind, I use USPS mostly because it's so simple. If it's an Ebay item I'm selling, I list it with FREE Shipping and it increases my bids, I have compared it with other people selling the same product and mine are higher.

akuseru (1854) | 3 years ago | I have definitely noticed that listing items with free or discounted shipping will increase the number of bids an item receives as well as the amount it sells for. That's another part of the reason I prefer to ship by Priority Mail--the flat rate boxes and envelopes help me cut shipping costs on heavier items.

7. cabergren (1156) | 3 years ago | I have been selling for about 2 years on ebay. I sell custom made doll clothes for American Girl and Bitty Baby dolls. Since my items are so light I ship them all First Class Mail with delivery confirmation. I use the program Stamps.com. It keeps track of my all my packages and emails when they are delivered. If a customer doesn't have his package I can check on it for him. I do offer Priority Shipping if the customer wants his package faster, but most times First Class mail delivers in 3-4 days.

8. 4MYGIRLS (5062) | 3 years ago | it depends on the item that i have sold. if it is a large item then i prefer fed ex. they are a lot cheaper than ups and i haven't had any trouble with them yet. i have shipped tires and a tailgate and other large items through them and couldn't have been happier. the smaller items that i sell i usually ship through usps. i stopped shipping the large items through usps because a priorty shipment took 10 days to get there and i was really upset about it. they also must have dropped it or threw it around because a piece of the manifold was broken. i had the package insured but the person who bought the item was not concerned about it and said he could fix it. we even offered to pay for the repair but he never got back to us about the cost. he even left us + feedback. what a nice person.
