Backpack vs. Messenger Bag

I recently switched from using a backpack to a messenger bag. It holds a bit less, but I'm finding it very handy and even a little easier when I want to get something out if it while walking. I mostly use it to carry books and things to and from classes. I stll love my backpack, though, and will probably keep using it when I go on trips and need to be able to carry more. Do you prefer one over the other? Is there a particular brand you like? I've been using a black Colorado backpack for the last 5 or so years; the messenger bag is a blue and black Victorinox Regent.
