Does your dog "belong" on the furniture? |
|
Our dog is not really allowed on the furniture. We do know that she spends most of her day on either the couch or our bed. I'm not all that worried about the bed, but we really try to keep her off the couch as much as possible. She doesn't let us trim her nails and I don't want holes in the furniture.
Since we're not home during the day she has full reign of the house. When we are home, she only gets up on the couch when we are in bed for the night. If we catch her, she acts all innocent like it wasn't really her on the couch...
She's a big dog so she doesn't get up on the couch when we are on it, or normally the bed. She has her own pillows around the house, but rarely uses them.
What do you pets do in regards to the furniture?

1. Debs_place (6749) | 3 years ago | My dogs are allowed on the furniture in the family room but not the living room. And they understand the difference. Plus they are well-mannered and always ask if the can get up on the furniture - when we are around.
They go on the bed - and I am grateful they let me use the bed at night.
But the the older of my 2 guys, will lie about being on the couch - when he hears us coming in...he jumps off the couch and run to the bed and lies down on it. He closes his eyes like he was sleeping. But when I touch the couch where he was, he puts his head down and comes over to give me a lick.
I put boxes or something on furniture when I think of it to keep him off or I cover with blankets to protect the furniture.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | Yeah, we always get the "Oh, you didn't see that" kinda look when she doesn't get down before we see her. And if she's already on the floor beside the couch its "I've been right here all night long" look.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | Mine is so big that we wouldn't be able to fit on the couch with her. She does stand by the bed when my husband leaves and whine at me until I pat the bed so she knows to get up there. She still hogs the whole bed though.

4. Peaches1122 (318) | 3 years ago | We let the cat up on the couch and the bed but nothing else. Dogs on the other hand need to stay off the furniture. They can cause too much damage just by accident. If you have a really little dog then I do not see any real harm in them chilling on the couch but BIG dogs need to keep off.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | That's why I don't want her on the couch... She can rip the cloth and then I'd really be in a fix.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | Oh I know! Once they think they're allowed on it there's no getting them back off of it! Our stuff isn't all that great, but it's not crap either... I'd like to keep it halfway nice looking as long as possible.

thescribbler (242) | 3 years ago | Last night when we went to bed, at my suggestion hubby put aluminum foil across the sofa seat cushions. It worked. She put one paw up there, heard the sound, felt the metal, and stayed off of it. The foil is still there and she's lying on the floor at the end of the sofa.
I'm not sure how this will work in the long run, but for now, it's working like a charm.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | Wow, I've never heard of that... It might be worth a try!!! One thing we do know that she's afraid of is guns. We're always joking that we'll put a gun on the couch to keep her off it. I don't know why she's afraid of them, she's never heard them but the first time she saw him cleaning then she took off and wont go near them.
Thanks for the suggestion!

thescribbler (242) | 3 years ago | Wow, that's weird about the guns, but probably a good thing. The foil is still on the sofa and the dog is still on the floor. Of course, we'll have to take it off soon. I'm guessing she'll be back up there. We'll see.

| 6. Childrenx4 (40) | 3 years ago | I have a sixteen year old mutt, that is her in the photo, the black and white, anyhoo, we figure if she is still able to make the jump to the furniture she is welcome to it. We have taken to putting a blanket on all furniture because like your dog, she won't let us trim her nails very often. It is a wrestling match to do it. The littlest dog, my big pom, sheds like crazy, so the blankets help keep the hair off my couch. We remove them when we know friends are coming over. They won't jump on the couches when friends are over.

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | We gave up on the nails, it just wasn't worth the fight. She's a boxer/golden retriever mix so she's kinda big and pretty strong. She does biter her nails a lot to keep them trim, and the vet does them when we take her in.
That's funny that yourw wont jump up on the furntire when people are over!!!

7. ElusiveButterfly (9457) | 3 years ago | When our cats have chosen a spot to lay in and we try to move them out of the way they will whine at us! We get a good laugh out of that one. My kitten lays on my side at night. When I move her she will come back up and get comfy again.

8. catherIN (271) | 3 years ago | We have a beagle. She is not allowed on the living room furniture. She does sleep with my 13 year old daughter. During the day, my two youngest daughters often let her snuggle with them on their beds. We have 2 dog beds, one upstairs and one downstairs. She likes to lay in those.
One time,we were all outside and left her alone to long;at least she thought it was long.I heard this awful noise coming from my house. In case you don't know, Beagles don't really bark, they howl. I ran into the house thinking she was hurt. I found her standing in the middle of my table, howling! One of the chairs hadn't been pushed all the way back up to the table. So,she was able to climb on the chair and then the table. We now make sure the chairs are pushed to the table. We don't really leave her alone ever since we found out that our dog likes to dance on tables and have howling parties. LOL!

reinydawn (4236) | 3 years ago | OH MY GOSH!!! That musta been a sight!! When my kids were younger, our dog slept with my youngest. Now that he's in the Navy, sometimes she'll pester my oldest until he lets her in the room. Normally, she sleeps in our room - NOT on her dog pillow though...
