My dad has a breakaway collar with his phone number on it for his one cat. The cat was an outside cat that he adopted when it showed an interest in becoming an indoor one.

It's there just in case he should accidently get out and get lost.We have two dogs ourselves and both wear tags so they can be returned if they get lost. It really isn't a bad idea.

I think it is a very good idea to have your cat carry identification. My cat stays indoors, so for him that's not necessary, but if he were to go out, ID would be a definite. If you love your cat, you'll safeguard it in every way possible.

Our cat does not go out at all, so we do not have a collar for her because we don't see the need for it.
