Cold Case - U2-Using Music in TV Episodes | | | | Critics seem to really hate that shows like Cold Case use music in their episodes or close the episodes with what they call "music videos." They think it's manipulative or something. I think it's terrific, personally. The music can be so evocative of an era or a mood. I remember in a "Without a Trace" episode when the detectives were searching for a young girl who'd had a baby and they closed the episode with "Little Green." It hit THE chord for me because it was Joni Mitchell, one of my favorites,*and* a song I had always related to, having been a young unwed mother myself. I cried like a baby. Last night Cold Case did something different. They used U2 music but not necessarily from the year the show was covering. The U2 music went back to the 80s although the episode was set in early 2000s. It was, however, appropriate to the situations. My only problem was in liking U2 so much it was taking me away from the story. What use of "background music" has struck the strongest chord with you on a television show? Did it bring back personal memories or was it just especially evocative of the times? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | When Grey's Anatomy used Anna Nalick's Breathe as background music in the bomb in the cheast episode. It struck me at that point of my life (I was under a lot of stress even until now) to just Breathe.... stress would always be there no matter what and the 1st step to deal with stress is breathe. I kinda liked how they did the video montage and how the songs captured the situation in the show. | | | | | | | cremechese (4490)

| | Thank you. I know the song you mean. I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy in a long time, I'm not sure why. I think there's something on at the same time that I watch. Some nights there is just too much "viewing pleasure" and I don't want to get into recording too much stuff. | | | | | | | Globo nos EUA sem antena? | | If a movie didn't have some music in it there would be a lot of people complaining I am sure .. so why shouldn't TV programmes have music in them .. and in any case they normally do have music at some point or other .. I tend to half listen to the music while concentrating on the action that going on .. although sometimes they put the music on so loud that you can't think over it ... | | | | | | | cremechese (4490)

| | Reviewers can be a little snobbish and that seems to be one of their TV peeves. I don't get it either. | | | | | | | Local Coupons Ridiculously huge deals every day. Like doing your city at 90% off! www.Groupon.com | add comment | | | |

| | I think half of my favorite songs come from hearing them on tv. Sometimes, I like songs not so much for the lyrics or rhythm, but because it reminds me of the show. For example, I heard "How to Save a Life" from The Fray in a Grey's Anatomy preview, but the song never really did much for me. Maybe because that really was a music video. They showed clips of various episodes to promote the new season. But, then, I heard the song playing as the background to a scene on Scrubs. Scrubs blends comedy and drama, and this was one of the dramatic scenes, and one of the best episodes. And, that made the song much more meaningful to me. I think there is some manipulation on a small level. I mean, a show isn't going to play something particularly happy during a sad moment. Unless they're being ironic, and even that is to provoke a response. But, I'm able to enjoy the songs themselves without the tv show, and I'm sure my feelings towards the moments in the tv show would be the same without the music. So, the manipulation isn't so strong that I feel I'm being forced to feel a certain way. | | | | | | | cremechese (4490)

| | Right. It isn't the emotional manipulation of say, a movie like "Beaches" lol | | | | | | | Learn Christmas Music NOW Save 25% to 40% on Holiday Music Books, CDs & DVDs www.firststopmusicshop.com | add comment | | | |
