being an indian, all i can add is it doesn't require a passport to travel to NEPAL. my brother was denied entry to CANADA as he had a visa for USA but not for CANADA. but, as far as i know, US citizens donot require a VISA for travelling to CANADA just as we INDIANS donot require VISA to travel to NEPAL but a US citizen would.
as for the second part of your discussion, PASSPORT is an offcial document which gives us the license to travel and VISA IS an entry in that document which actually allows you to travel, leave or enter a country. A passport without a visa is a mere document and doesn't facilitate us on any of there, whereas visa is the actual grant or permission. if passport is the car, visa is the fuel.
thank you

I visited Nepal and although they did not ask for passport, they did ask for some identity card.
