National Guard on the Border  | |  We have put National Guardsmen on the border to secure them, in hopes of curbing Illegal Immigration and Drug Smuggling.
Just a reminder.. National Guardsmen carry M-16s.
4 National Guardsmen RETREATED from a couple drug smugglers attempting to sneak over the border.
Here are the facts as reported by the major media outlets: On January 3rd at an outpost about 1/4 mile from the Mexican Border 6-8 gunmen, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying semiautomatic weapons approached within 20 yards of the outpost.
The Tennessee Guardsmen retreated and called the Border Patrol. The Gunmen retreated back across the border without shots being fired.
Now, these men are recieving commendation.
My thoughts: GIVE ME A BREAK! These men are trained by the US Army. Why should they be commended for allowing for our borders to be less secure? Thoughts?

A soldier's duty is to follow orders, unless they are irrefutably immoral. In the case of these Guardsmen, they were following orders, handed down to them by their superiors.
Would I recommend commendation? No, I would not. There was no extraordinary act of bravery. They were doing what they were trained and ordered to do.
Having said that, I give these Guardsmen alot of credit for not engaging the threat and following orders, despite their most certain desire to confront the threat.
I think that perhaps the more important question to be asking is: Why are our Guardsmen deployed on the border with orders to defer to the Border Patrol when an obvious threat is upon them?
